you don't see the connection between bodily self denial and purity? think of why priests are chaste or monks don't talk to anyone while meditating for weeks etc

there is a strong , pan-cultural connection between practicing physically confining behavior and finding emergent transcendent experience
Maybe I'm just a hyper, excessive American. :manny:

I've never had been a gluttonous eater. I've always been skinny and I don't eat much. I think if you already eat a decent low-fat, low-sugar diet and don't indulge in excessive consumption of food, that's good enough as far as purity. Not eating for extended periods of time is unhealthy and I see no rational reason to do it.

As far as monks meditating for weeks, that's a whole 'nother story. I'm talking about people who live in mainstream society, not some monastery or convent or cave in Tibet somewhere.

Meditation is a good thing. Introspection is a good thing. Keeping indulgences should be strived for. People should manage their diets. Fasting seems extreme to me...but whatever.

Christians can fast as well...I actually have a few Muslim friends and the fast is pretty much what everyone said above..its more of an awareness thing and not to mention its cleansing to the body.

I actually don't eat in the presence of my muslim friends during Ramadan.....that Eid feast though :ahh:

lol. not excessive but very material yes. There are real rhythms and cycles and festivals and rituals that human beings have created that our species gravitates towards. What does a "honeymoon" really mean in a physical sense? Nothing. What can it mean in a society or individual mind? everything. Same with all these religious cycles and practices. The industrial life just denatures all that but might not lead us to a better place

I respect our Muslim brothers for doing it. I like the concept of Ramadan, only of the only few things I like about Islam.

They fast for philosophical introspection and to form empathy for those without food or abundant water supplies, as well as showing discipline. It isn't overly religious either.

It is absolutely detrimental to one's metabolism thought.

If you can do without food or water which are necessary to live, you can do without material things. Although some people don't need to physically fast in order to mentally fast bad thoughts(the main purpose of the physical fast).

during ramadan can't you eat when the sun goes down though? I work with a bunch of muslim ladies and heard that at work and wasn't sure if it was correct though or if I just heard incorrectly.

it's not just abstaining from food breh. It's pretty much abstaining in general. To control your will. To be able to say no to temptations. Anyone can do without food or water for a day for a certain period of time.

^^^^ Not sure if :troll:

Its a really rigorous thing...I'm one of the few Christians i know that fasts for Lent still (half of the fam is Catholic). been doing it since i was 21.

since i started i fasted Facebook, Soft Drinks, Candy and Meat.

I don't really face book anymore, learned to like tea/juice way more than pop, i hardly if ever eat candy anymore and I'm not as big a carnivore as i used to be.

It really helps with perspective...i actually tried the Ramadan style of fast...its not impossible...but it is VERY difficult.
