Not always. It wasn't about peace until Scott La Rock got killedWhat do you mean? KRS's approach was always "for love peace must attack, way stronger than war, to conquer it and it's law"
Not always. It wasn't about peace until Scott La Rock got killed
I don't agree with that, that's not what KRS said either, he said pretty much Criminal Minded was to get through the door, and he had some of the peace record even before and it was a plan.
I do think it was emphasised further after Scott passed. But I think KRS was always on that metaphysical spiritual shyt even as a young 13 year old.
Some indications even from South Bronx such as..
KRS-One specialize in music I'll only use this type of style when I choose it
I came with Scott La Rock to express one thing
I am a teacher and others are kings
If that's the title they earn, well it's well deserved, but Without a crown, see, I still burn
I am a teacher he said, so that was in the earliest times in terms of his professional recording career.
You want a fresh style let me show ya
Now way back in the days when hip-hop began
With Coke LaRock, Kool Herc, and then Bam
B-boys ran to the latest jam
But when it got shot up they went home and said "Damn There's got to be a better way to hear our music every day B-boys getting blown away but coming outside anyway"
There's got to be a better way.
Someone should shop On it
None of those lyrics you posted proved KRS was about peace. The first is a bragging rhyme and the second is merely an observation.
And it doesn't matter what KRS said I listened to his music. He wasn't about peace. He wasn't overally violent but he wasn't about no "All black people need to stop killing each other" and all of that until Scott La Rock died. Before that his music revolved around: I'm a better rapper than you, women, drugs, guns, and shyt like that
Only use this type of style when I choose it...
KRS said basically he was saying he's about making music, he only dissed people and battels them when he chooses too, his primary focus is music.
I am a teacher, that is signalling his intentions. If he was just about women, drugs, guns then he wouldn't be saying I am a teacher.
And the latter bit indicates Hip Hop trying to find a better way rather than the needless killing bullshyt.
I think it does matter what KRS says, cause he knows his intentions better than anybody else. I listened to the music too, he had a lot of shyt on Criminal Minded that showed he was more than just a gangsta rapper.
Like I said, he did step it up even more after Scott died, but it wasn't merely JUST due to this, it was a plan. And the indications were littered even throughout Criminal Minded.
You're a king, I'm a teacher"
See kings lose crowns but teachers stay intelligent
DJ Scott La Rock has a college degree
Blastmaster KRS writes poetry
We're not promoting violence, we're just having some fun
He's Scott La Rock, I'm KRS-One
So take each letter of the KRS-One Means Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone
These are just a few small examples, it really is littered throughout the album everywhere. I think it's far too simplistic and also not quite accurate to say it was solely because of Scott's death, I think it's evident what he's really about from the album. Not to mention the fact he said it himself, like I said he said it was a plan, so he was gonna come out the gate like that but drop little things in his songs then ramp it up later... Possibly might even have been inspired by Malcolm, from criminal to teacher...
I didn't say he was merely a gangsta rapper, I just said he wasn't about peace (And by peace I mean non-violence) until Scott La Rock died.
"I am the man with the six-pack of Heineken
I get tipsy
But never in your life try to dis me
Cos I don't battle with rhymes, I battle with guns" - KRS
