Koala is an app for iOS and android but the 404 is a machine made by Roland. The newest one is super dope, probably the closest they’ve ever made to a mini mpc. They work great alone but also complement each other very well
Dope how does that work flow work. Do you bounce files from both to a PC or can you transfer files from the app to the 404?

The way I work is using the 404 as a sound card. I use koala either on my iPad or my MacBook (it works exactly the same) I can either run my turntable in to my SP and record samples straight into koala, or record them into the SP, apply effects, chop, etc, then run them in.

If you don’t have a turntable or want to sample YouTube or any other audio, you can do a screen grab of a video and koala will import it as audio. I sample like that often. Then you have the audio in the app and you can run it back and forth between it and the SP. I do most of the heavy lifting in koala and use the SP for its effects.
I’ve also used Serato studio and the 404 combo lately (Serato studio in place of koala) and it is also a super dope combo.

The best thing to me about koala is that I’ve started beats on my phone, used airdrop to finish them on my laptop, used the feature in koala to save as an ableton file and mixed everything easily. If you told me 10 years ago I would be doing this I wouldn’t have believed you. It’s so seamless :ahh:

I’m pretty sure you can transfer files using the 404 app but I’ve never done it.

Yo that's insane. Didn't know you could record audio over usb now a days.

When I used to make beats on my ipad, any device you hooked to the ipad could only input midi but it couldn't be used to bring in audio to the ipad or back into the device like you can with the 404. That's wild, thanks for the info bro.

To get back on track with the thread, Akai does suck lol. I thought about putting impc pro 2 on my iphone as a mobile music making option but I know Akai is flawed with their support for things in general.

Akai support has been shoddy in general since they got bought by Numark in the early 2000's, but they are really doing a good job with these new MPC's.
The updates have been phenomenal and they are really adding value. They even added an easy way to make keygroups which is one of the only things I felt the machine was lacking compared to older MPC's. If they added a mod matrix like the MPC 4000 it would be perfect :banderas:

I say all that to say, we are far from the days of the MPC 1000/2500 when JJ had to make an OS to make people wanna use the machines. After hearing over and over how awful every post Numark buyout MPC was I thought I'd never buy one. Then I saw all that they actually paid attention to the user base and added useful features. After a year and change with mine, I'm using my hardware more after being stuck in Ableton since around 2010. I like switching it up, but I still fukk with my MPC heavy and I hope Akai continues to support it

mpc one looks dope

but that Live 2 looks serious:whew:

I might just go ahead and get that

i copped a live 2 about 2 weeks ago
Jawn is :ohlawd:

The addition of the monitor speakers really helps. I the new plugins are 100% necessary..the HYPE and Oddessey plugin. I don't even use tube synth or bass line anymore. The presets in hype and oddssey are amazing and the ability to customize sounds is easy..well not in the oddessey...just moving 1 knob slightly will fk your whole sound up..have your flute sounding like a buzzsaw real quick :mjlol:

I make beats and the ideas flow out more than with the mpc live 1. The speakers help like I said..as I get to really hear how the music sounds with some space as opposed to only using headphones to master.

Only thing I could ask for is more better plugins. Like better string..guitar presets...Basically more synth sounds. Get rid of tube synth and bass line for something better along the lines of HYPE and Oddyssey .

Those complaints are the exact reason why i'm still on a DAW.
And i'm not a musician so im gon need me a mouse to write melodies and chords.
With the pad perform option you can play through like 2 dozen chord progressions..like they got a House progression ..Hip hop..Trap...etc. each with different chords.

Then you can arpeggios those chords or play them as patterns..rhythms..use different variations to get different melodies.:banderas:

Lowkey you're also learning musical theory too. Pad perform will show you all the chords that go in the Key you select. ..and it shows you the notes the play so you'll be playing in key.

I got the live 2 November 2021 and it's really addictive once you get into the groove of the workflow. I think I've made like 100+ songs on it so far.
