Yup, no big "moments," no over the top music, just real people dealing with real shyt.

Edit: I'm a huge supporter of this channel right here. This is the type of direction I would love commercial black comedy/drama films to go in

I hate to make the cliched "Tyler Perry sucks" post, but Diary of a Mad Black Woman really ruined black drama/romance movies imo. It ushered in a new era of over the top, melodramatic black films, replacing the subtle more down to earth movies like Brown Sugar, The Wood, Love and Basketball, etc.

the biggest example of the impact Tyler Perry had would be comparing the Best Man to the Best Man Holiday. I liked Best Man Holiday, but all those over the top/overblown dramatic moments wouldn't be in there if not for Tyler Perry. The Best Man was a much more subtle, laidback type of film in comparison whereas the Best Man Holiday reminded me of a stage play

Tyler Perry killed off the black film industry.

Terminator 2 is action but realistically its background and whatnot was Scifi with the HIGH quality special effects.

For action I might have to say it was the trend that for some reason in the late 90s action movies needed comedy. And not just one liners like bruce willis, like...breaks in action for jokes and sillyness. Everyone tried to do that and it just doesn't work usually..and it REALLY watered down action. While the series was a success, I gotta say RUSH HOUR 2 breaking RECORDs with that formula made no movie just a hardcore action film until like...JOHN RAMBO almost 10 years later.

BTW, big shouts to Stalone for resurrecting your hardcore ultra violent shoot em up with John Rambo, and Expendables. yes the expendables is a sloppy POS but so was Commando :heh: its part of the genre at its best.

Rush Hour is part of the cop-buddy genre though. That type of comedy goes back to 48 Hours and flicks like that.

I think the first "SAW" film was refreshing, but unfortunately it had a VERY limited budget and was shot in only a couple of days. The idea of a mastermind criminal like Jigsaw is haunting and that ending of the first movie :wow:

I think if they would have fleshed it out....and create a trilogy spread out over many years it would have had a better history attached to it. The first 3 films are pretty good...after that it just became a joke.

The video game was surprisingly decent also.

Blade 3. Still eats me up inside.
They tried to turn blade into a vehicle for the vampire hunters.

I think im finally seeing the season 3 glitch at it concerns a lot of shows. involving individuals of African descent yall.

I was at EMP in seattle looking at an exhibit of the history of horror films. Really interesting. They had a great timeline of horror movies and the genre in general, the origin of fear movies (like how zombies are Hatian and african culture ghost stories), and more...

..and it made me think about the genre deeper. in a documentary, Eli roth was talking about how when the exorcist was made, the big studios DESIRED to make horror films...like that studio made a big academy award film, then was like "now lets make a horror drama" and they approached it AS a drama. This is also why the film was so good...studios don't do this any more. HALLOWEEN was made this way. Friday the 13th and poltergeist as well.

Now? Direct to DVD status unless you're a reboot or rehash of some old stuff.

Some say, SAW ruined it with a return to torture or superviolence horror which turns A LOT of people off..and people emulating this style. SCREAM was a throwback to the bigger studio and actor horror films, and the psychological fear rather than slasher status.

So, I attribute SAW to ruining to genre, along with others.

What are your thoughts on this, or OTHER genre that are stagnant
Not sure if you can say Saw, as too me it was more of a thriller not straight up horror. The sequels on the otherhand......

And what was that documentary with Roth? I love horror docs
