Dude skipped completely over the process of being able to demonstrate proof of income, he assumes that having x amount in the bank is a golden ticket, it doesn't work like that in Chicago nor anywhere else UNLESS you're moving to some low income apartments that only care about your security deposit and first month's rent.

Umm most landlords will take that...they just care about money. In any other city besides nyc where they want to see proof of employment w2s paystubs first born etc (unless you're white).

And second 1000-2000 is more than enough to set yourswlf up while you look for a job. If not your own apartment than a cheap sublet.

I moved here with 400 dollars in my pocket in August of 2012...found a job working security in times square in three weeks. Thats not counting the 325 i used to sublet for two weeks while i found work and a place.

You're dumb. A lease is only 1 year, and like plenty of people mentioned here there are numerous apartments for rent where $17,000 will more than cover a years worth of rent. If you can prove that the money is LEGIT(which she CAN do) then theres no issue.

Or you can find month to month living situations too where you're not on a lease.

With that you could.
Move into a new apartment/sublet/room share
Buy months worth of food (non perishable items)
Set aside money for bills and utilities
While trying to find a job
Once you get a job put money in the bank to hold onto.
Start a business where you can continue to make money wholesaling items or selling something cheap at a mark up to double/triple/quadruple profits.
Get a real estate license/insurance license/or anything else to fall back on.
Buy a beater car for 4,000 or less used with minimal issues.
