I remember when my grandma hired someone to get me to memorize the Quran when I was around 7. I learned to read arabic out loud but had no idea what words I was saying. I asked for an English translation, and the teacher told me that I didn't need to know what it meant, reciting it in Arabic is the purest and only way.

I still don't know what I read, brehs. But I do know that I love me some porkchops.

in the religious understanding the original words are very important... you can read it in other languages but it doesn't count as reading the quran. So it's not just about the language per se (there are many variations of arabic besides the quran style, so even those don't count) but the exact words passed down through memorization for all these years

How does it not "count"? So if you phonetically pronounce out all the arabic words in the quran but don't understand a syllable of it, it "counts"?

Memorization would make sense if you knew the language you memorized it in.

the message is still the message and its unfair to make one language count. let's not pretend that the Arabs have almost successfully implemented people to believe their culture=Islam.

I had the opportunity to be converted by the nicest guy I will ever meet in this world. he has the entire Quran memorized and he agreed that its better to learn it period. I'm the original story I quoted the man said it doesn't matter if he understands it he just needs to memorize it
