most overrated/underrated hood movies?

Overrated - Paid In Full (2002)

I grew up watching those street DVD’s and the movie just can’t compare to the real story. There were some exciting and emotional moments but it’s mostly a superficial bore.



Underrated - New Jersey Drive (1995)

Wow, where do I even start? Action packed movie with a group of friends that you can’t help but root for. Everyone of us knows a Midget or Tiny dime. Movie was fun from start to finish. Rarely ever gets mentioned when hood flicks are brought up.


Honorable mention

Underrated - Squeeze (1997)

Follows a group of kids on the streets of Boston. My cousin was actually in this movie. He’s one of the main characters. Lots of wild shyt in this film.

I don’t know if it’s a hood movie but City of God is by far the most overrated movie I’ve ever seen.

Violence for the sake of violence. To this day I cannot grasp why it has such high ratings.

Belly is the most OVERRATED, I remember that shyt looking like stone cold trash when they showed the trailer on TV. I remember seeing the ads in the Source and thinking it was trash. I remember a chick told me she saw it and Method man is only in like one scene, and I knew it was trash and had no desire to see it. Didn't watch it until it was on DVD and some of the homies had a copy in my door room..

Then I finally saw it for the first time and to my suprise, it was trash, worse than I thought cuz I figured it wasn't going to be good but I had no idea how wack the plot is.

literally said New Jersey Drive before i clicked. It is every bit as good as Menace and Boyz to me, for real. I think the portrayals of the carefree recklessness of the youth was actually better in that movie than its peers, and they had the best 'evil cop' in the genre ever.

the bond between the brothers REALLY seemed like friendships of mine and how they fade, especially when someone is just too fukkin wild to be around.

Overrated: If it counts as a 'hood movie' [its a movie that the hood LOVES, not a hood movie IMO], King of New York is borderline bad. Lawrence Fishborne is nearly terrible in it. Nothing is natural in the entire film.

if King of New York doesn't count, even as someone from Michigan: 8 mile fukkING SUCKS.
