Most good rappers will have 3-5 album runs in them and then make something that doesn't meet the standard of their previous work. And if you don't make the same records over and over again you're bound to slip up at some point.
Guys like Redman, Nas, Jay, Ghost, Thought off of the top of my head and a few others were able to put out different but great albums out one after the other before putting out an ehh record.
