I don't understand this. The top grossing movie of 2016 was Finding Dory which sold only 57 million tickets. So most Americans didn't see that either

Most Americans don't watch ANY movies in the theater, so I'm not sure why this is newsworthy. Most Americans didn't see Rogue One or Captain America Civil War or anything else. Not sure why people in this thread are using that to jump on their "lulz fukk acclaimed movies" soapbox.
I only tend to watch Oscar noms when they come on TV.
Got a few on DVD though (Apoc Now, Godfathers, Braveheart, Platoon)
I mean, stuff like the money you spend and the size of the movie screen itself make some form of spectacle 99% necessary

As sad as the majority of this thread makes me. Really good film can have a connection with you way beyond what your average pop corn shoot em up one liner fest.
Like literally seeing the title "The Kings Speech" in this thread I had an actual emotional flashback and started smiling thinking about my favorite scene in that movie. I'll always appreciate and watch stuff like The Artist, LaLa land, etc because there more to life and art that the type of flicks that stimulate my lower self.
I've committed since like 2005 to see all the best picture nominees (TYBG for screeners). And I genuinely feel like my life is better having seen a lot of great movies I"d have otherwise ignored like the two mentioned or;

you serious?!?! Nolan is up there with the greats Bay could be too but he's just like I said all flash no substance... Nolan has alot of weak points but writing is not one of them... visually, cinematography wise its beautiful... I give bay credit he has a formula and sticks to it but it becomes boring and stale because you know it's gonna be the same shyt over and over.... Like i said why not focus on having the transformers themselves be the focus of the movie...

How could Batman be one of the best fighters in the world but couldn't fight to save his ass. Nolans fight scenes were trash like the Ra's fight on the train and the first Bane fight. He cannot film a fight scene to save his life. Don't get me started on the fight with the Joker.
His bother was the writer for most of his movies and for other then the dialogue, his writing is ass.
And yes he is overrated, Fiqua would've done a much better Batman with better action scenes. Interstellar was overhyped trash, as I said watch Sunshine for a better go into space to save the word picture. Who remembers that magician movie?
Bay doesn't try to be a intellectual hack. Humans can relate to humans more then robots hence why you see them on screen more. A bunch of robots talking on screen won't cut it. Y'all nggas on his nuts hard but seem to omit what he did to the black astronaut. shyt was foul dude. Quite possibly the worst death to a character in cinamatic history. And the movie was way too long. How you gonna go into the vortex the first time only to find out humans created it??

We're in the golden age of television. It's not like I'm watching Ouch My Balls! Some of us have real things that happen that we have to unwind and laugh or half watch an action movie.
Oscar bait movies can be depressing, I saw a trailer for When A Monster Calls, bruh my mom just died from cancer I ain't trying to see no cancer movies right now, if ever.
Every person deals with grief differently and some people only watch movies as "escapism" but honestly, I think a film like When A Monster Calls could help a person dealing with the lost of a loved one. It had a good message about the subject.

Oh, no doubt I'm sure When A Monster Calls is a great movie, as Is a lot of the movies nominated. I'm just not ready for it, I've gotten choked up by the bad reality shows my mom watched and will never get to see again. Before this last year I'd try to keep up with the critical darlings. The last Oscar nominated movie I watched was Room.
I haven't even watched Birth Of A Nation yet and that's typically right up my alley.

all I know is I loved the dark knight... Nolan has glaring weaknesses in his filmmaking when it comes to action scenes like i said... And I loved the prestige the twist at the end wasnt what i was expecting but I seriously went
Oh and the aliens created the 4 dimensional vortex he even said so when he entered it during intestellar...
The whole answer in his daughters room was a circular loop, which i understood meaning the answer was there the entire time and we didnt really get the answer until he was in the construct and sent the messages back to himself in the past...
My only gripe with that concept is encoding a huge fukking message on an antique watch it would have been better if it was in some sort of computer system or equation which she could get better through another form...
Straight up. I don't go to theater for any movie, it's gotta be something I'm dying to see in a theater if not I'll check that shyt whenever I find it for free and most Best Movie pictures fall into the latter.
