Boxing/stand up = instincts.

BJJ/Grappling = athleticism (especially is this includes strength).

Just starting out in the game I would have to say athleticism. I think about fighters like Bryant Jennings and Seth Mitchell who started really late in life but because they were great athletes, I think it helped them in their first few years fighting.

Now along the way you would hope these fighters add skill piece by piece....

Then look at a fighter like Roy. Nothing about Roy said conventional technique. Roy was a supreme athlete of the highest level and got by in most of career knowing the fundamentals but ultimately just being freakishly athletic.

Idk

By the time you hit pro fighter level with a grappling base can you ever really be considered not a grappling technician? Rarely see dudes up high in those ranks relying on athletism and im sure there are plenty of brehs wrestling.

Athletes who flirt with combat sports never hop into grappling. They get entranced with the prospect of knocking mfs out. There's highlight reels, Instagram pad work videos, money or national level fame in wrestling/BJJ in exchange for a whole lot of grind.
