My wife and daughter have their passports up to date, and are ready on command to pick up and leave for Canada as soon as I give the word. Once I see the indicators point to full no turning it back fascism, I am sending them away. I am retired military, so with the time I have left I will stay back and help all other people who wish to leave (though my primary focus will be Black people first).

Now I know all of the above sounds alarmist, but I am a student of history. I know that if you are not out before the lockdown, the effort required to get out will be exponentially more. So I am just trying to make sure that I and my family are prepared for that increasingly possible eventuality.

Read up on what was done in Germany from 1933 leading up to WW2.

Countries that are trying to make a regime change will seek to hinder their citizenry from being able to leave once they have acquired power. If the US does move more in a Fascist direction, there is a possibility that they will desire to "cull the masses" of undesirables. Which group of people do you think will be at the top of that list? Especially when you consider many of the para-militaristic and militaristic organizations in the US are infiltrated with WS.

So yes, I have my Wife and Daughter ready to leave when I give the word. I will not take any chances like the Jews did in Germany and ignore the warning signs. Those Jews who saw the writing on the wall got out, those who did not suffered greatly. The same could be the case for our people, if we do not pay attention and assume circumstances can not change.

Last, no they do not have Canadian citizenship, but Canada would just be a first immediate stop. They would not stay in a country so close and dependent on the US. Eventually, with the possible rise of White Nationalism all through Europe and Asia being pretty much a no-go for Black people long term, they will have to make the move to somewhere on the African continent. I will leave that decision up to them, since I will be long dead by then (I have renal failure, so would have about 7-30 days of life left in a collapsed US.)

I think saying 'the sky is falling' for decades without it actually falling numbs people. So now when things are getting dark people are largely 'meh' to it.
A poor job has been done(politically) of managing hyperbole IMO.
I think the average American takes things in literally.

I think another factor is that people are so beaten down that they're just super discouraged. Broke. Working harder than ever. Psychological toll of the pandemic. Economy may look decent on paper but doesn't feel fine. fukked up roads and infrastructure. Bad healthcare. No unions. Everyone knows climate change is fukking us and feels hopeless. Women are getting their rights rolled back. The next election will likely be against an 80 something year old dude that should be resting in a home versus either Trump or DeSantis. Etc.

Our society is being stretched to the absolute breaking point while all of this is going on. The system has been unsustainable for a long time.

TL;DR: Literally every bad thing that can happen in a country feels like it's happening all at the same time.

Kinda crazy this has come up in the last 100 years and has been shot down every single time... there's been a lot of conservative courts during that time too.

This cant be just for voting rights, right?

I feel like even conservatives in the past when this issue has come up haven't felt as comfortable using the courts to push for full on facism. I don't know if I want to go as far as saying conservatives in the past were more principled or more ethical, because I think they've always been trash. But...I do think the current climate in America has conservatives feeling more emboldened. It's really a cold civil war out here, and now that they've got the ball they are gonna run with it in ways they maybe didn't feel comfortable doing in the past.
