Wow. Never even thought of it like that tho, but OP right. When it was my pops side we always played Monopoly at family functions. Mostly the older folks, the way y’all came out to a smoke filled room at 2 am looking at your fam playing cards was what my fam did with monopoly. They’d be up all night playing it. My moms side didn’t do shyt but argue, so I didn’t really realize that Black folks didn’t play monopoly like that till like 12-13 and a homie had to teach me how to play spades and tonk. My aunt even had a few different ones, a M&M’s joint, and regular one and like 2 other themed sets. And that side is hustling going back a long ways, great grandmother had juke joints in Michigan and Ohio, grandfather ran numbers in Chicago, my pops and countless uncles and aunts did they thing too. Never even really put that together till just now, tbh I never really gave it too much thought why they didn’t play cards like most Black folks.
