The Chi (South Side)
Not disrespect to Mafia and the like genres (too many classics) - but to my sensibilities - British gangster/gentlemen crime dramas/thrillers have always been superior.

The dialog is always sharp and I don’t think anything navigates that absurd/grounded line better than them. shyt is grimy but with an undertone of absurdity that makes it incredibly entertaining. So much fukkery happens, but it’s not the “cars in space” fast&furious type fukkery, it’s just a bunch of interconnected people making choices that result in a complex net of cascading mess. Characters will say the most ridiculous/funniest shyt with a straight face and be 100% serious about it.

shyt is goated and Guy Ritchie is one of the scientists of all of the above

:ehh:

let's not discredit that the creator of top boy is HEAVILY involved in this show as well.

at this point, u gotta wonder why eddie's own family even likes him. he's got absolutely no redeeming characteristics.

he's singlehandedly gonna get everyone killed.
My guess is Harry will have to kill him by season end. He's the most useless character and I'm almost positive he didnt even kill Tommy. He just likes the attention he's getting.

I’m not particularly a top boy fan. I think it was cool - not a bad show.

I don’t think I’m discrediting nor discounting other’s contributions simply by listing things I like that are tentpoles in Ritchie’s projects - dialog, pace and grounded absurdness of it all.

In any case, my overarching point was that Mobland is cool

The mafia movies are all almost satire with how ridiculous those guys acted. British media is very well written . So you make great points.

I remember Ritchie making a point of how hard it is to get a gun in England, in Snatch, Lock Stock even in the gentleman movie and series
This one has loads of guns/grenades. He kind of went fukk it on that point :russ:

The Harringtons, when you pull the cover back, don't seem that competent as a family, It's kind of hard for me to buy that they're top dogs when Harry is the only one that isn't weak. And he's not even family. Conrad's inability to control his bytch makes him look weak to me. Kevin's weak, Eddie's a p*ssy, and the other brother is portrayed as a joke. While we don't know too much about them, the Stevenson's come across as the more buttoned-up family for sure in my eyes.

The show outright says that Conrad is a shell of his former self - by means of his wife "look at this place - who does he think he is? Sir Lord of c*ntsfordshire? Look at him now on his iphone checking his "portfolio". there was a time he wouldn't leave the house without a razor or a shooter". The whole "success breeds complacency, which breeds hubris, which breeds arrogance" thing Richie had Harry decipher. The cop Fisk tells Harry - "Conrad may not be aware, but you know the walls are closing in"

You still get flashes like the opening scene with the turks/greeks or the way he spoke to his wife after offing his childhood friend - when she tried to touch him, but yeah - he's pretty much a successful gangster in the twilight of his career with no viable heir-apparent, but the right-hand man/fixer that isn't really blood, which the wife feels threatened by and is poisoning him against because she wants a true Harrigan at the elm to the point she's propping up an imbecile
