Miyamoto has a history of being shady, he use to shyt on Donkey Kong Country back in the day.
Because it wasn't like his OG creation, he was passive aggresively hatin. Made no sense considering he's the father of Nintendo's biggest properties with Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda.

Eh....you're right but Mario was the first "superstar" mascot as far as side scroller/platformers go and I think people are getting caught up in "how is Sonic like Mario?" instead of looking at it like everyone wanted a mascot and/or a character based side scroller (Bug, Bubsy, Rayman, Taz, even lesser known stuff like Astal) after Mario.

He made the comment in 1995. This was after the Genesis Sonic games had been released, sold millions of copies, were partly responsible for the Genesis being competitive with the Super Nintendo, and Sonic was an extremely popular character. He dismissed Sonic as an imitation of Mario in the nicest way possible. Even if you don't think it was "ether," it was a backhanded compliment.
