Hidden Colors mentions many times how "whiteness" for example has changed over time in American history. In the beginning the Irish weren't considered white. They were placed in ghettos and discriminated against. Same with the Italians. It was only Anglo-Saxons considered white at that time. But over time that changed and the Irish and Italians became "white" and were no longer discriminated against and got the privileges of whiteness.
