:manny: researchers have been claiming whatever theory they're working on would be reality in 20 years forever. we're long overdue fusion power, almost human or beyond artificial intelligence, etc. not saying that this might not be different but a lot of times people researching these things tend to get a little too over optimistic and jump the gun.

difference here is that these researchers actually have prototypes in the lab

peep this http://www.cringely.com/2012/11/06/the-nanotech-replicators-are-coming/

A longtime friend of mine has significant pieces of a replicator functioning in his lab right now. He’s no mad scientist but a respected engineer who is known for his broad technical interests. Right now he can’t make you a mug of Earl Grey (hot), but he can lay down in nanoseconds trillions of atoms of any abundant element, placing those atoms not just in perfect rows, but also placing them in intricate patterns with other atoms to create familiar combinations as well as new materials the world has never seen before.

He is already creating new materials with unique properties that couldn’t exist before simply because no materials have ever been built by men or women to such precision.

this isn't some pipe dream.....there are guys in the lab right now working on the building blocks of this revolution......read up on nanotech and you'll see its a serious field with alot of serious people investing lots of time

its not crazy when you realize that they are already able to move atoms to build new objects :mindblown:

MIT Researcher Neil Gershenfeld, who is working on future natotech machines says that full on star trek replicators are only 20 years away. This is basically the holy grail for 3D-Printing. Right now you can only use simple materials like plastics to create small objects. However, remember who primitive computers were 20 years ago compared to today's smartphones. Imagine a world where a Replicator that can assemble and disassemble objects at the molecular level is available. No more scarcity. No money needed. No more need to waste the planets resources. Practically every object becomes 100% recyclable since everything is made of atoms and the only reason they look different is because they are assembled differently.

 I don't usually post like this, but; the demonic fukkery would be at an all-time high

We really think that this will be used for good?

I might just get on my monk swag and became a rural recluse.
