The sermon ended and the beating began.:banderas:

Self-described militant atheist James Maxie pummeled an Ohio pastor after a church service, opening long gashes over the man’s eyes and breaking his nose, the Dayton Daily News reported.

Maxie, a 28-year-old sex offender with a violent past, reportedly mauled Rev. Norman Hayes after the preacher asked Maxie’s church-going girlfriend if she was being abused.

"I questioned his girlfriend in his presence if she felt safe," Hayes, 57, told the paper. "He was very, very upset that I'd even suggest that he would hurt her. Then he turned around and hurt me very badly."

North Hampton Police Chief Jarrod Campbell would later say he’d rarely seen “an incident this brutal.”

Maxie dropped the pastor with a punch and then rained right-handed haymakers on his face, Hayes said.

"He came from nowhere and hit me ... and knocked me down, and then he got on top of me and just kept hitting me over and over," Hayes said.

In a statement to police, Maxie claimed he was trying to reclaim his faith in God and “asked questions about science and religion” that angered Hayes
. He claimed the pastor told his girlfriend she was “going to hell for dating me.” :umad:

“That’s when I made the worst mistake ever,” Maxie said.

But it wasn’t his first. Ohio prison records show Maxie was convicted of felony assault in 2006 and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in 2007.

He was charged in 2004 with four counts of cruelty to animals, the Dayton paper said.

His Facebook profile includes numerous references to atheism and criticisms of religion.

In the “About” section, he writes, “very very hostile.”

Maxie reportedly apologized for the attack when he was arraigned Monday on felony assault, but the pastor was skeptical.

“I think he probably was sorry for the situation he found himself in,” Hayes said. “I think it’s very easy to be sorry in that environment when you’re before a judge.”

Hayes said his religion allows for forgiveness, but he still thinks Maxie should be punished.

The "atheist" man was clearly unstable and violent in general. It's also a big mistake to ask an abused woman if she's being abused when her abusive man is in the same room, if you care about her safety at all. The pastor seems like he was trolling as well by asking that question, just because the guy was an atheist.

Clearly if this man believed in God he wouldn't be so inclined to violence and hate. A common trait amongst atheists i've encountered both on here and in real life.

If this guy did this, then throw his ass in jail.

Theres nothing "to" atheism. Its simply your stance on a single question

Its not asserting anything.

Being an atheist doesn't make you therefore someone who deserves to act like this. To hell with this clown.
