But on the other hand, I stopped doing back exercises and just started doing a variety of weighted pull ups.....the results were night and day.

Whoa now. Weightlifting wont necessarily make you a better fighter. But unless you train like a n00b bodybuilder it is functional.some people just got crazy ass genetics breh. Let's not act like weight lifting gives you functional strength. That's why boxers don't lift heavy like that.
so if someone goes from deadlifting 200lbs and gains 50lbs and can deadlift 600, i'm sure that all dem gainzzz were nonfunctional
