To add on, the US has been taking out states and governments that were moderate, progressive and based on western norms of modern society. Their great crime was to pursue self-determination rather than fold to American imperialism.
What happens now...
Al golani/julani is his nom de guerre, meaning he's from Golan heights where is his ancestry. It's widely believed that the new Syrian leadership will want to take back this territory, meaning a confrontation with Israel.
Israel will want to see that the Syrian state collapse to weak fragments. Alawites regrouping in some location, much like these militias now in power did in Idlib.
The forces that took down Assad consist of 20 or so militias united in a common cause. Well trained, well armed with armor divisions and drones. A real conventional armed force. It remains unclear if they will fall in line with Al golani and his rebranding into moderates.
Ironically, Iran and Israel now have a common interest in seeing a weak Syrian state. The Iranians will employ the same covert intelligence tactics mixing bribery and intimidation of key targets, just like they did in Iraq and succeeded in preventing a new strong state from emerging that would've been a client of the US. Iraqi state remains in shambles till this day.
However, crucially Iran has now lost its proxy deterrents in Syria and Lebanon, it's safe to assume and proceed from. It's all but certain that they will now have to finally complete their nuclear deterrent in this new reality.
Russia and Iran have also been driven closer together by this development, even more so than before.
Edit: of course turkey also has territorial ambitions within Syria. Then there's the Kurds, who have interchangeably been fighting and dealing with these militias. So, Syria is literally beset from all sides. They have been receiving massive funding from CIA, and I don't see that continuing now that the mission is accomplished.
