Good movie. 20 minutes from being a very good movie. a lot of scenes were awkward since the main character looked like 11. A little to liberal with the word nikka for my liking
Yeah the beginning was terrible. Movie got better as it went along. Then pretty good at the end. The black kid speech to the little one at the end was the best part. Loved how every single kid was a semi pro skater irl, even the youngest one. These kids can skate. Jonah hill said it’s really hard being a pro skater and make yourself look like you never skated before..referring to the little one

I thought this was brilliant, or very close. Very impressive, and powerful to me, being more of that generation than not, I just turned 33. Will write some thoughts out later.

*From a longer piece I am working on

Born in 1985, I barely missed the mark for the exact teenager in this movie, but the themes, some of the music, the culture references, clothes and trends that carried over into the late 90's, and early 2000's, are all powerfully emotionally resonant.

More than the fashion, the language, the language just tore at something in me. I never skated, but the themes of coming of age in that era, the emotionally stunted communications, the homophobia, the misogyny, the casual cruelty and apathy. The things I never fully assumed, but had to work out parts of later, and still struggle with.

This is how so many of us came up. The cross sections of lower middle class/poverty/black/white/Mexican/upper middle class, converging in drugs/sex/alcohol/music. That "party", I hadn't see one that realistically shown ever, maybe, not exact what mine were, but so close. The desperation and discomfort of it all. The frenzied lust for drugs and sex, and validation. The addiction, where Stevie is downing a 40 alone, in a dirty bathroom, that was me.

The tension that fills me as I watch movies like this, and 8th Grade, where I've become so protective over characters, that in a sense, to me, represent in small ways myself, and the choices I didn't make. I choked up before that pre final scene, I lost a friend of mine, at that age, and I was thinking of his last moment, and it had to have been just like that. I think about that person a lot, who he would have been, and how he never got the chance.

Brilliant, powerful, compelling movie, with a perfect score, a movie that is not all ugly, and not all clean, one that is hard to shake off. Top 3 of year, as of now.

Not a bad film.

Great soundtrack

Na-kel was really good

The older brother had the freshest clothing :whoo:

It’s crazy how all that style comes back around :manny:

I feel like I could relate more if I was from LA and was heavy into skating

I think most can relate to that moment of getting your first Olie or trying to land a trick though

And yea a lot of N words for a mainly white cast and white director :hubie:

Movie was kinda predictable too.

I hope Jonah’s aim wasn’t to make this generations version of “KIDS” for the West Coast :patrice:

Not a bad film, does have indie film/skater edge lord aesthetic but the basic story of friends in your formative years is there

I was surprised at the incorporation of the sex scene but it was like that back then.
