None of these games are prohibitively expensive. Most games have deep discounts and ways to access them without paying full retail price. Some of the most popular games today have ZERO sales.

Developers want people to play their games,

Most developers have signed a deal with a publisher. Player engagement is their bargaining chip. It’s up to the publishers to make money off that engament.

Most developers are praying for a game to be anywhere near as popular as Sea Of Thieves.

Hell sony has modeled there entire future strategy around finding a SOT type success.

I can look at the steam numbers and see that Sea of Thieves lost over 50% of their player base since release. But I have the critical thinking skills to understand that isn't the end all be all.

I can look at Madden 24 and understand that it's not the best Madden Game ever just because it's currently on the charts. Same with NBA2K

The game has been out for 6 years, and the moment it released on a new platform it dominated the charts.

No one is disputing that.

But you want to shoehorn SoT and Grounded in this convo instead of the other games that have more retention/sales. Destiny dwarfs both of those games.

Unlike you I don't consider Destiny a Sony game as it's a franchise that was already around before the acquisition. Fanbase was already built in.
