Michigan's Republican Gov. Rick Snyder was in Washington this week to talk about immigration reform. I got a few minutes with him before his appearance with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. So, of course, the first thing I asked was how the troubles of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell might affect the Republican brand.

Not surprisingly, Snyder, a very successful business leader in his first term as governor, politely sidestepped that question.

"Obviously, when you see situations like that, they generate a lot of concerns and questions and attention. What I say in respect to my role in all that is, I'm governor of Michigan. So I stay in my lane pretty much and say, 'The citizens of Michigan elected me and hired me to take care of their state.' So I stay focused on that."

With that out of the way, we went on to talk about something he really wanted to discuss: Snyder's call for federal action on immigration.

A firm member of the GOP's establishment business wing, Snyder would like to see Washington policymakers pass comprehensive reform. But he's not waiting for that. In his state of the state speech last week, Snyder outlined a strategy aimed at making Michigan more hospitable to skilled legal immigrants and boosting that population, which he sees as an economic force.

Snyder has proposed funneling skilled immigrants into Detroit as a way to rejuvenate the moribund city. The goal would be to attract 50,000 immigrants over five years.

"They're job generators for Americans," Snyder said of skilled legal immigrants. "So this could be a huge economic boom to help accelerate, jump start the comeback of Detroit."

But before Snyder's vision could be tested, federal lawmakers in Washington would have to raise the number of work visas being issued for legal immigrants.

What would be Snyder's pitch to those prospective workers?

"Why don't you just move to Detroit? We have demand for engineers, IT professionals, life sciences, health care people. Come move to Detroit as part of this 50,000 visa program, set up shop and help generate ... more jobs for the people of Detroit. That's a pretty cool concept."

Michigan's jobless rate has been falling, but it's still 8.4 percent, way above the national average.

Some might ask: Why not just train jobless Detroiters in the needed fields?

"We're doing those retraining programs and we're going to continue 'em," Snyder said. "But it's not just about having the retraining program. If we can create much more economic activity by having these engineering centers, these IT places come, there's great demand to hire a lot of Detroiters and bring down that [unemployment] rate even faster and better by having even more people come."

An influx of immigrants will only further marginalize blacks who don't even control their own economy to begin with. This is bad.....very VERY bad for blacks. 1) The hub of the largest automotive development/production center in the world

2) The largest town and main point of trade with Canada, the world's 11th largest economy

3) The largest inland ports and distribution points for the ENTIRE Midwest (and the US I believe as well)

Black people should have eaten WELL off the real estate crisis in Detroit, yet, Arabs came in and scooped everything up Not to mention the POLITICAL CAPITAL that city had because of the majority black/democrat voter base. NOBODY IS GOING TO HELP US. At least in Miami with the Cubans, in Mexico, in Colombia etc, the dopeboys reinvested in the local economies/real estate. None of that happened in Detroit within the black community. You are a citizen, you have high schools available to you, colleges as well. Obama is not going to come save you, you have to save yourself. The foreigners aren't doing anything you can't do. They got properties RIGHT NOW for $1000. I can't speak for Detroit, but Mexicans in Chicago get along with blacks just fine, we ain't out there beefin' like y'all do in Cali. I agree with this. Blacks in Detroit and in the surrounding areas really have no one else to blame for the takeover but themselves. No one is putting a gun to their head and telling them to continue fattening the pockets of Arab and Asian business owners. As I stated this is a complete lack of leadership and agenda. It's absolutely amazing driving through Detroit and seeing just as many foreign owned business as there are mega-churches. Many of these monuments of failure are directly across the street from abandon lots and neighborhoods. I think a lot of pastors should bear the brunt of the blame because it is they who more often than not organize the people. Detroit's spiritual leaders are just as corrupt and without vision as their political leaders. These people twiddle their bloody fingers while the overall economic power of blacks is swept beneath them. The people are largely ignorant and in a perpetual moral slumber. They have no faith and hope within themselves, their people or their so called "leaders". It is definitely time for a paradigm shift in thought within the black community, not only in Detroit but abroad. This is pertinent throughout almost every predominately black community across America.

Breh, it's too late, interracial relationships and a black president has moved blacks from being "blacks" to being "Americans". Look at how many blacks were disassociated with the Trayvon Martin situation. Compare that to Rodney King in '93. There are no more Muhammed Alis, Ray Charles, 2Pacs, those days are long gone. So the economically sufficient blacks don't consider themselves the same as the economically insufficient blacks. The talented 10th has abandoned its own kind. That kind of thinking I think is not going to work anymore. It's up to those people in those neighborhoods to realize that Obama/Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton/Farrakhan is not going to come save you. They have to make the moves themselves. Otherwise it's a rap, Detroit finna go route the same route as SoBro (South Bronx), Design District (Little Haiti), and all the other gentrified prime real estate areas that was transferred from the hands of blacks to the hands of whites. Soon black people will be politically obsolete,mainly because we failed to establish a strong economic foundation across the country.

Now Detroit will be turned into a little Mexico after the Democrats and Republicans finish pandering to them in hopes of getting their vote.

Meanwhile black people will continue to embrace this backwards hip hop mentality,plus find ways to divide ourselves by skin shade, as well as continue to have outrageously high abortion rates which will further weaken our political strength on the national level.

From my observation,black people aren't ready to compete with Hispanics,Asians and whites like we're supposed to be doing.

Instead we look to them for acceptance when in reality they don't want nothing to do with black people outside of making money off us. Honestly,I could have said fukk these clowns a long time ago and continued to just make my money like I've done,but I've seen this coming ten years ago at seventeen years old so I had to say something.

As individuals we can do good financially if you went to school for a technical trade or a degree,however if Black ppl expect to be successful on a collective level there has to be changes and adjustments made in the way we go about gaining political power.

As long as black people dominate the population centers, we will never be politically obsolete, which is EXACTLY what they are trying to change. The amount of votes that Wayne County has is the most influential in the state of Michigan. So if they can get all the blacks out of Wayne County, it's going to shift the voting balance of power. Which is the same thing they're doing in Chicago, they moved all the blacks out of the projects into the north/northwest suburbs. The near South Side is already gentrified, and the wave is going further and further south. That's why I love dem Haitians, b/c there are a LOT of Haitians that didn't sell their properties when the market was hot in '00-05 down in Little Haiti. They have a cultural identity that Black Americans lack to a degree at times. All the bosses in Detroit (and I KNOW there are mad paid nikkaz over there, Meech ain't even the biggest to do it from the D) decided to put money back into the streets, blacks would have been controlling one of the most important cities in the country. (I rank it top 5 in importance). It's sad really, but what can I do? I just keep investing and KIM

ive already posted this video in another thread, but one thing black people need to understand is that politics is a secondary issue, politics is not the key to economic prosperity, overall we already have all the poltical power they we need to be prosperous, what we lack is skills and education, and those can only be had by us changing our culture, it wont come from an outside force
