clash of the titans and real legends and icons :jawalrus:

yeah, they always have a rivalry back in the 80's

my favorite out of the 2 has always been prince

michael jackson was the shyt but prince to me was like an alien. bruh was from another planet and the way his style was like a hybrid of sly stone, james brown, parliament funkadelic, joni michtell, carlos santana and curtis mayfield always left me like "how in the fukk does he do this shyt?!"

it was like prince had different elements of these all of these legendary and pioneerin' artists and was able to not only combined certain things that they did that influence him but find his own voice and make somethin' new out of it.

mj broke barriers too, especially with gettin' music videos played on mtv and album sales, "thriller video" etc etc. but prince was always the guy between the 2 who had me like "this nikka is from mars or some shyt. he from another planet" :dwillhuh:

the fact that prince not only wrote, produced, and arranged classic, great and good music from 78'' to 87' for himself (albums, bootlegs, unreleased music, b sides) but others from his camp/side projects like sheila e, the time, the family, vanity 6/apollonia 6, mazarati, madhouse, and then even outside of his camp for stevie nicks, the bangles, sheena easton, madonna etc etc speaks volumes to greatness. to think that in 10 years this man basically just ate, slept and breathed music when he won't smashin' dimes like vanity, apollonia, jill jones, susannah melvoin (wendy's sister) and so on. but all that classic, great and good music in 10 years?! that's damn near impossible! :mindblown:

mj was one of a kind and truly one of the best, hell, i can understand people callin' him the goat but prince was always more of my favorite artist between the 2. prince is just from another world, space and time :wow:

Plenty to do with the music. Prince taking more risks and being more organic with his sound makes his music more interesting to listen to.

Bomani Jones said a lot that I agree with on the subject.

in other Bomani words, "Prince works best for pseudo-intellectual masturbation." :pachaha:

fukk all this bullshyt nikkas talking who wanna go track for track?

all that needs to be said.

MJ and Prince had the Weirdest rivalry, but both of them knew that they were geniuses and both of them knew that they were the only ones truly running the 80's.

Quincy Jones tried for YEARS to get MJ and Prince to work together. The first time they ever met they just sat across from each other staring and never said a word.

Quincy Jones tried to get Prince to be on the We Are The World song. MJ was indifferent about his inclusion and Prince seemed reluctant but agreed. Prince was a no show for the session but called at the last minute to ask if he could come put down a guitar solo. MJ amd Quincy said no

Another time MJ had Prince break down, in graphic detail, the meaning and themes behind his song "Jack U Off". Prince played along and described the song to MJ while rolling his eyes

Another time Prince had a "gift" for MJ, he opened the gift see some charms and feathers. Prince, not saying a word, then left the room. Quincy told MJ to burn it, fearing it was some voodoo curse (yes this story is real)

We all know the infamous story behind Bad. MJ originally wanted it to be a collaboration with Prince, his original concept for the video was for them to have a Dance off with Prince to see who was really Bad. Prince later joked that he was put off by the opening lyrics but the truth is he thought the song was garbage.

Michael had the songwriting and musicianship talent of Prince. I absolutely, 100% stand behind that. Michael was just as talented and just as genius.
mike had to learn to write...prince was writing out the gate..for himself n his side groups..

The ONLY thing Prince could do that MJ couldn't was play instruments, and he had Tito for that

Prince has a different kind of artistry. His music is a lot more sexual/spiritual (pause :dame:), and he wasn't afraid to veer out of R&B and do heavy rock styles or synthpop for example. Prince was way more funk than Michael and had way edgier content. Michael Jackson could never pull off a record like Darling Nikki or Let's Pretend We're Married.

You mean "Prince."

For the record, I consider Prince to be quite talented. He's experimental, does some unique stuff, can write quite well, as evidenced on "Nothing Compares 2 U". Premo and Timbaland are huge fans and clearly there's an element of Prince in some of my all-time favorite hip hop. I just don't know a single song of his that I think is fantastic, other than "Make Up" by Vanity 6 (that song is so ahead of its time it's not even funny). "Kiss" is a good song. But it's not "Beat It" or "Wanna Be Startin Somethin", nahmean?

I disagree. Kiss is a fairly significant song because it abandoned one of the staples of pop music - a bassline.
