He's not entirely wrong. Bill is not someone I would cape for as outside of this incident he's always given me a weird vibe. He comes across as a smarmy, I'm your best option, paternalistic racist. I doubt he means ill but I suspect if he was questioned long and hard enough, unsavoury sentiments would rise to the surface.
That being said, we do need to move beyond depending on certain words to reach our conclusions. It's a double edged sword when we are dealing with people who have the experience and sense to avoid saying certain words or phrases. What we should be focusing on is the person's conduct which is why Mike is not entirely wrong.

He's saying to the guy, you screwed up big time and you'll have to make up for it i.e you owe the black community. It's also giving Maher insight; I know you've done lots of positive things in the past but what you've done now with the N word hurts.
That's his approach and I suppose he feels Bill Maher can be and has been an asset in the past.
