PS4 and Switch matters a lot. It isn't just PS5 and Switch.

I can bet if FF was on Switch and PS4 it would've sold a LOT more there too. It's also on PC. So 2 major platforms there(PS4/Switch) compared to only 1.

...Metaphor isn't on the Switch, wtf are you on about.

Nvm, I was mistaking that. Still, Metaphor being on the PS4/PS5/PC is helpful for Atlus. You're discounting that install base and comparing it to the PS5 by itself. If Rebirth was on PS4 as well it would've sold a lot more in Japan. FF XVI sold 336K in it's first week on one platform in Japan. Again that's impressive compared to 110K across 4 platforms. I just feel the "FF sales were bad/" narrative is very misleading ignoring the context even from Square themselves clarifying:
Square Enix said: "With 38 million PS5 consoles shipped globally (as of March 31, 2023), sales of Final Fantasy XVI surpassed three million units worldwide several days after its release on June 22, 2023.

"Taking into consideration the sales figures of the acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Remake and the difference in size of the install base of the PlayStation 4 at the time of this title’s release, we can see that the attach rate of Final Fantasy XVI is considerably high, given the PS5 install base.
Either way this is off topic, Metaphor/Persona is still great. It's just context needs to be added when saying "Sales were rubbish" compared to a game that's on a much bigger platform.

FF only selling three times more than a new Atlus JRPG IP says a lot about how low the FF brand has fallen.

Also Metaphor is on 3 platforms, and two of those don't matter in thr Famitsu charts.
They just need another stand out main character, this latest one doesn't really give the same kind of vibe, cloud, lighting, today, and Noctis gave.

Ultimately, Atlus JRPG sold a tiny percentage of FF games back in the day. Now it is one third - says a lot about Atlus JRPG popularity, but also a lot about FF stagnation.

I don't think it's about FF stagnation necessarily, I think it's just consoles are less popular today there than it was 15 years+ ago for example when XIII released. I can bet if a new mainline FF game released in Japan on the Switch 2, PS4, PS5, PC it'd probably reach those "1 million units sold in a day in Japan" headlines depending on the hype it garners.

I wonder how Metaphor would've sold if it was only on PS5 in Japan. I doubt it'd be 110K, I'd like to see breakdowns of the numbers.

Clive is a better protagonist than lightning and noctis

Its really the supporting cast of xvi that leaves a lot to be desired

The Switch is one of the most popular consoles in history.

Square have just mismanaged the FF IP over the past decade, with the exception of FFXIV. It is far far less popular in relevant terms than it was when, for example, FFX released.
