The director of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie, Jordan Vogt-Roberts has spoken about his plans for the film - including the characters he'd like to include.

"I mean, I'm a big Sniper Wolf fan," Vogt-Roberts told IGN whilst promoting his new film, Kong: Skull Island, "and when we were sitting down to think about the script at a certain point it was like, 'is Cyborg Ninja in this movie or not?' and the part of me that was a little kid was like, 'there's no world in which I'm ever going to make a Metal Gear movie that Cyborg Ninja is not going to be in.' It's really easy to be like, 'it's a good character to save for the second one,' but no, no, no."

Vogt-Roberts also explained that he's considering whether to include fourth wall-breaking sections, in the style of Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid (who spoke directly to the player about other games they had played):

"I actually do think that considering breaking the fourth wall is an important part of potentially what that movie would be. Finding a way to do that in an interesting way," he explained. "I think things like Deadpool have actually shown that you can play with that conceit these days.

"To me, the fourth wall breaking is a little less important than the walking philosophies and ideologies those characters represent, and getting that right and the tone right and things like that. If breaking the fourth wall makes sense, I'm all for it, [but] I'm more interested in the 'Kojima conversations' about whatever song came out then or whatever - it's that stuff that it just absolutely needs."

Vogt-Roberts has spoken previously about how he wants to do series creator Hideo Kojima justice with the film, a point he reiterated to us:

"If you make a Metal Gear movie it needs to be [...] completely committed to one tone but then goofy the next moment, and then stylised and bizarre but then beautiful and reflective, and just that whole spectrum of things that is Kojima's voice."

If you wanted proof of just how far Vogt-Roberts' love for Metal Gear goes, look no further than his latest movie - the director points out that a boat in Kong is named Gray Fox, after the Metal Gear character of the same name.

Psycho Mantis being in MGS1 :lawd:

Metal Gear Solid movie director made potential writers come to his house and play MGS games

Jordan Vogt-Roberts signed on to the live-action Metal Gear Solid movie project back in 2014, which was long enough ago that he managed to direct and release Kong: Skull Island before coming back around to the project. Earlier this year, Vogt-Roberts made it clear that the franchise is extremely important to him and that the script was in development.

In a new interview with Glixel, Vogt-Roberts let us in on how he chose which writers would be working on the project and showed them what Metal Gear Solid was all about. Vogt-Roberts managed to do that by having them come to his house and play Metal Gear Solid.

“As I brought in writers, I basically took them on this weird journey where I brought them over to my house and I designed this weird course where I would load up the original Metal Gear and I would have the writer play that for a while, and just teach them this idea of stealth gameplay,” the director explained, referring to the 1987 original.

“I would let them play that, and generally, anyone was able to play that because anyone can pick up a game of that era and understand the mechanics of it. They’d play that for an hour or so, and then I would jump forward and then I’d load up Metal Gear Solid 5 and say, ‘This is where it jumps to. You just saw the beginnings of this, and over the course of 30-odd years, this is where it took us,’ so you see both ends of the spectrum."

Of course, he didn't simply show them the original game and Metal Gear Solid 5, he also had them play Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Let's just hope his passion for the franchise helps to create a video game movie adaptation that's actually good.

I agree. While it's a part of the game, much like the 4th wall stuff it just isn't needed.
Jesus. this is a Legendary film production.

I hope they don't squander a valid IP with ideas that spund like they came out of a smoke session

I thought the production value of king Kong was decent but I Think the attention to character development required for metal gear and balancing that with the action scenes kojima created between snake and Vamp for example, will be difficult to duplicate for this clown.

Metal Gear is like 90% anime sillyness with 10% Tom Clancy military espionage. Might as well make it Jack Ryan movie if you skip the sillyness.
Young man, you need to realize that movies do not need to adhere to tropes in gaming writing. It's a recipe for disaster.

Quiet was raped in mgs5. Rape need not be combined with slap stick humor. Go Jason Bourne serious or save the IP for a better director.

The silliest this movie need get is crawling around in cardboard and having a playing off of a soldiers real reaction to a pinup girl cardboard box, while still being outsmarted.

I'd trust this movie in Vin Diesals hands before this guy
