Me either, I still applied. If I'm chosen I was just going to hire someone on fiverr to make the designs.
I didn't have any experience designing before merch. A lot of the people didn't before they were accepted. There's a lot of apps and programs that help you make designs. They can be simple. My most popular designs right now, took me a couple of minutes to make. Several designs with one word. One with 4 or 5 words and one is a symbol that I got from a free arts site and changed the color.
Fiverr, upwork and a few other places are good places to hire designers. You have to be careful because some of these designers will try to sell you trademarked and stolen designs. Hamzabahamou on fiverr is one of them.

Just submitted my first design
