Nah I feel like we’re being disingenuous towards Dave. He had a lot of wrestling fans attention a few years back. Like I can’t speak on his popularity and the importance of WON through the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s— but I vividly remember his name popping during the timeline of Okada vs Omega.
You may have always disliked dude, but I remember WON reached an all-time high with subscribers at the same time NJPW had gained the most fan attraction from North American fans (specifically American fans) ever. Now there were a lot of variables to make this happen: Vince McMahon running a shytty product, WWE fans like myself looking for another outlet to enjoy good wrestling, Okada vs Omega putting fans onto NJPW, Young Bucks being over af in the indies and using a finisher named after Metlzer, Meltzer getting exclusive interviews with guys like Okada, and then the connection he had with Jericho— let’s not rewrite history on that either, Jericho was actually beloved big time a few years ago lol— and then of course the creation of AEW.
All of this made Dave and WON as the medium for fans looking for wrestling outside of WWE— sure you probably knew about Okada, Omega, NJPW, Young Bucks, NOAH, Stardom and other non-WWE info before Dave’s popularity boom, but to act like being that person was the norm back 5 to 6 years ago is capping to the extreme.
And for dudes like me and my friends who didn’t know shyt about anything looked at Meltzers star ratings as the holy grail, especially since he has like 40+ years of wrestling knowledge, ratings and WON archives.
But now with 2024 lens I feel like he got lost in his own sauce. He started giving every match 5 stars to the point he devalued the meaning so much he started using 6 star ratings. So now none of his ratings hold any weight.
Even at his height it was clear he was double talk Dave— but now it’s so bad, also a lot of other contributing factors have devalued his credibility . There’s a a lot of variables for this: his old age, his lack of sources in WWE, the obvious favoritism he’s had for AEW, again, the star rating system becoming a parody. And most importantly I feel like there’s too much wrestling for that man to cover on a weekly basis to do weekly WONs and WORs, and everything else he does.
It seems like SRS and Fightful are everyone’s go to for reliable info now.
