How did Metlzer get clout in the wrestling industry anyway? Did he wrestle or manage someone behind the scenes back in the day?

Never wrestled or managed. Here's why:

1. Longevity and perseverance.

2. He did legitimately help a lot of wrestlers in the industry at one point or another by publicizing their issues with wrestling companies over money/angles/whatever. Bad PR for the companies, and the PR had an influential viewer base.

It is confusing why he's still as popular now though. His cache is obviously not the same as it was at one point. His detractor are louder and more numerous. His competition is stronger. The fact he's still relevant makes me wonder if it's just dirt he holds. Like a modern-day J. Edgar Hoover.

Once MMA's mainstream popularity started to wane a bit he realized there was more money in catering to the antisocial neckbeard anti-WWE crowd, and once he saw PWG in person it just cemented that. That's the most vocal, die-hard, willing to spend money fanbase in wrestling right now.

He a pioneer of the dirty sheet newsletter before people got info from wrestling websites. Made connections with bookers and wrestlers and grew from there. Used to have alot of reliable first hand sources.

for what it's worth, when talking about anything before like 2010, or before the Young Bucks indy boom, he absolutely knows his shyt, a great historian. Any old school wrestler you've only heard of, but never saw any footage of before, he will know dude's whole career and upbringing.

The problem today is he's become so jaded from years of shytty WWE programming, that even now when it's in a period of not being so bad at all, he won't give props, and seems to have a vendetta as pushing AEW as the better product. And his sources are weak nowadays too. It's a shame I really used to enjoy his takes.

Also the work he did during the Steroid scandal and Monteral Screwjob. Bret esseitnally went to him and he covered both stories pretty well. I dont know how jaded he is compared to Alvarez whos just a loon at times. But he needs to sort of refine his presentation. Getting people like Garett Gonzales, Andrew Zaraian will help because he cant be out here covering stuff dirtsheet style still when he had positions in the media (The National, covering MMA for Fox Sports etc )

Another thing that's happened in recent years is Prichard and Bischoff having podcasts where Conrad uses Meltzer as a source for stuff has made it cool to think he reports untrue things and thats sorta galvanzie the rise of anti-smark fandom to think he isnt credbile when you can still look at those reports and see he was right. Like for instance Bischoff likes to play it out like Meltzer always thought the third man was Mable when in reality he reported that they were just names floating around of who they might get if they couldnt get their guy (Sting, Mable, Bret coming over) but even then he was the first to report it was Hogan a week out.
