A 19-year-old woman who fatally stabbed her boyfriend during an argument was sentenced to probation and ordered to go through a treatment program to address her methamphetamine addiction.

Washoe District Judge Robert Perry warned Ana Padua on Friday that if she did not successfully complete her 2- to 10-year probation complete a drug treatment program, she would be facing a 20-year prison sentence.

Earlier this year, Padua pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon for killing Joseph Alan Robb, 35, who was a boyfriend for about a week. She was held in the Washoe County Jail until space opens at a local drug treatment center.

Robb died Sept. 16 after arguing with Padua at his apartment at 240 Thoma St., authorities said. Police found him on a second floor landing.

Padua used a folding knife to stab him once in the chest, a wound that pierced through his heart, authorities said. She left without calling the police or for help.

Her attorney, Jennifer Lunt, said she used the cell phone of someone she met on the street to call Robb, as she did not realize he was dead. One witness, Lunt said, described Padua as frightened and panicked and acting as if she thought she was being chased.

Padua was questioned by police hours later and released. In October she was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Padua is under 5-feet tall and 80 pounds. Robb was just under 6 feet and about 175 pounds. She told police she was defending herself when she stabbed Robb, who was trying to prevent her from leaving their relationship by beating her, authorities said.

Lunt said Robb had slammed Padua’s head on the ground during the fight and when he was found, had some of her hair in his hand. Her bags were packed and she was trying to leave, Lunt said.

Prosecutor Kelli Ann Viloria said photos taken of Padua 24 hours after the stabbing show she had no injuries or evidence she was battered. Lunt said neighbors reported that they were afraid of Robb, one saying Robb had acted like a “mad dog.”

Tenants in the apartment complex called police and reported a domestic disturbance while the couple argued.

Detectives found love notes in the apartment Robb wrote the day he died, begging her not to leave him and saying he loved her so much his chest hurt.

Lunt described her as being born to a drug addict and never having a chance in life.

During Friday’s hearing Padua apologized for killing Robb and said she felt badly for his family.

Robb was the father of a 5-year-old boy who lived out of state. His family told Perry they wanted Padua to be sent to prison. They said he was a good man who made bad choices, like his methamphetamine use.

Viloria asked that Perry sentence Padua to a term of eight to 20 years.
