Never been much of a Meek fan, going back to like 2011, I've maybe heard 2 of full projects, and some loose tracks here and there. He was always very generic, if sincere, content and song concepts, with a good flow, was the original Tony Story on Dreamchasers 1? I heard that and only liked a few tracks....I'll always fukk with street rap first, because that's the content I relate to the most, what made me a fan, so I was let down when Meek kind of fumbled in the midst of his feud with Drake, but, I had to admit, I probably had played more Drake at that point, then Meek, who continually made himself look bad with immature antics and IG clubrat tendencies, I mean dude, is like 2 years younger then me, but you'd think he was 10, but since 2015, I've paid more attention to his music, and have liked some, I though his Game diss was the best track out of that incident.
This project has the feel from the first few tracks of an artist with something to prove, with the Fat Joe 'My Lifestyle' sample, Meek comes in triumphant, his music speaking to a confidence and belief that wasn't always apparent last summer, as Drake's 'Back To Back' reduced his street pain rap to meme punchlines. This is street shyt, and it's done with polished and intricate production, overall. "Sold a lot of dope, dodged a lot of cases....." this kind of content is above the kind of glitzy, suburban demo that Drake appeals to.....This first 4 tracks are as good as Meek's ever sounded, dope flow, focused bars, and yeah he says a lot of the same cliches, but there's a hunger and rawness, that sounds genuine, "i used to sell dimes of reggie nigaa....I get the chills everytime that confetti hit us...." Also a kind of retrospect that feels more mature then his previous work, though he overdoes the stunting, imo, in an insecure Trumpian way.
'Blue Notes' is probably one of the better beats I've heard this year, it's the kind of production that grabs your attention instantly, and yeah, a better rapper is probably what it needed, but Meek does his best. I can see that song, among others being played long into winter, for nights out in the city, some introspective, views of the city type shyt, in a 5 star hotel balcony, Valentino sneakers and all that, as well as jacket on, walking through the slums. Makes me forget this same guy who cried in court over a 6 month sentence, with all the wealth he reminds us of, constantly. The Pusha T verse on 'Two Wrongs' seems to allude to Geezy, which is raw, and surprising. Smooth, mournful production.
Tony Story 3' is dope too, I'll have to revisit the previous installments. Like a lot of tapes, it's like 5 tracks too long and there are some missteps, just tracks that I wasn't interested in, trend chasing, or just overly cliched, but this is the best Meek project I've heard thus far. I've referenced Drake enough here, but I'll say this is much more compelling then 'Views', and over the course of the album he makes it clear, he's not Drake, and Drake doesn't, and can't make music like this, no matter if he gets 21 Savage or Migos for features.
