Could McMafia season 2 not return on television until January 2020? A report has confirmed that production for the series, which stars James Norton as Alex Godman, the son of an exiled Russian mafia boss, has been pushed until the fall of 2019.
According to Film New Europe, producers of McMafia season 2, recently, applied for cash rebates as part of the incentive for filming in Croatia. The report also cited that local provider MP Film Production has been re-commissioned to help with the filming, similar to its arrangement in the first season.
Some 150 Croatian movie crew, as well as 3,000 local extras, are expected to be working on McMafia season 2 once production begins. Locations marked for filming include Zagreb and coastal cities like Split, Rijeka, and Opatija to represent countries like Russia and France in the TV series.
A co-production between BBC in the U.K. and AMC in the U.S., McMafia season 2 was renewed in December 2018. However, the networks have not announced when the series should be back on the air.
Created by Hossein Amini and James Watkins, McMafia is based on a book with the same title from author Misha Glenny. It tells the story of an investment banker who becomes drawn into the real family business -- organized crime.
McMafia season 1 ended with Alex closing deals with drug criminals in the distribution of heroin in Europe. McMafia Season 2 is expected to pick up where it left off, with Alex's slowly rising in the underworld to become another mafia boss just like his father.
While Norton is expected to reprise his role, the cast of McMafia season 2 has yet to be confirmed. His character's girlfriend, Rebecca Harper (played by Juliet Rylance), could be out of the picture as the actress has booked a significant role in HBO's Perry Mason reboot, per Deadline.
Also expected to be back in McMafia season 2 are Aleksey Serebryakov, who plays Alex's father Dimitri Godman, and Maria Shukshin, who is Alex's mother, Oksana Godman. Faye Marsay might also reprise her role as the sister of Alex.
Meanwhile, the series was, recently, nominated for Best Drama at the International Emmy Awards alongside Once Against All from Brazil, Bad Banks from Germany and Sacred Games from India. The winner will be known by November 2019.
McMafia season 1 debuted on January 2018 in the U.K. and a month later on the AMC. The show is also viewed via streaming at Amazon Prime.
