What would be cool is if a few characters from other seasons guest appeared in bit roles in later seasons to give the show's universe a sense of continuity.

This. I much rather see a season with two detectives investigating a drug case, being referred to a narc who used to be undercover in said crew and have Rust open the door on some shyt.
