Black people, in the hood, fukked with Hammer. Simple fact. This idea that hammer was a laughing stock is again, revisionist history.
Like I said the overwhelming majority of them (even in the hood) were casual rap fans at best.

He was a laughing stock to non-causal rap fans.. We :mjlol: at his skills and complete lack of flow every chance we got back then, friend.

A lot of people who now say things like "Hammer was the shyt" are saying this because they were in elementary or middle school when he blew up. I know this because so was I, and yeah, we liked him a lot in 5th grade. Know who else liked him? Our parents who didn't really listen to hip-hop but he was OK cause he was a great dancer and had catchy tunes that sampled music they liked.

But the thing is... the age group between us and our parents, like our older siblings and cousins and their friends who were plugged in to hip-hop... were NOT bumpin' no MC Hammer. They were listening to Public Enemy, NWA, Ice Cube, Quest, LL, KRS, EPMD, Cypress Hill, Geto Boys, Naughty, etc.- rarely was MC Hammer in that same mix. That was a whole different group bumpin' Hammer's shyt. Even the same little kids who liked him in '90 were done with that by the time '92 rolled around. Rappers like him, Young MC, Vanilla Ice, etc. were like gateway drugs that led a lot of people (especially young white kids) to rap, and once they saw what else was available, pop rap wasn't the shyt to them anymore. I saw this unfold in real time :pachaha:

Now as far as him getting dissed back then, he continues to play the victim in this but he opened that door by dissin' nikkas from the get-go... he even dropped "MC" from his name in '91, in his words, because he was an entertainer and "more than just a rapper". And yeah, some of his criticism was unfair in hindsight. But that time passed a hot minute ago. I'm just glad he said how he feels because nikkas were definitely out here three months ago swearing that he was being excluded from the Hip-Hop 50 stuff, meanwhile it was him excluding himself.

while he was being clowned by 3rd Bass....lol...Hammer was selling out arenas and people in the hood fukked with Hammer. Again, this idea that hammer was a laughing stock BY FANS is revisionist history.
It’s not really revisionist history tho. Hammers core audience was kids like me who were around 10 years old at the time and folks who otherwise didn’t really like hip hop. I remember my big sister and older cousins couldn’t stand him and clowned us for listening to him. I was a huge fan. But I also liked the shyt they listened to like EPMD and Kool G Rap. Intentionally going pop was very frowned on around that time.

I remember people talking about Hammer so badly that these 2 CACs thought they could diss him too. It almost ended badly for them. So I understand not wanting to be around a bunch of haters.

They tried to clown him every chance they had.

They mostly was dissing C&C music Factory in this clip. The Hammer pants is the only thing about Hammer

I've respected Hammer since the early 90s and respect him more even now after reading his response..
They degraded and insulted a great Black artist and the greatest live hip hop showman and now expect him to pretend like shyt is sweet..fukk ém, Im with the Hammer on this.
