The gloves controversy remains a hot topic. In the first fight between Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana, Mayweather objected to a set of gloves that Maidana wanted to wear and then to a second set of the same kind of gloves. Maidana ended up entering the ring on fight night wearing a different kind of Everlast.
Now, with Maidana saying the gloves situation hasn’t been resolved for the rematch — Maidana wants to wear his preferred type — Mayweather was asked about the situation in an interview with a small group of reporters on July 14.
“This is boxing. This is not bareknuckle brawling,” Mayweather said, before comparing the situation to two infamous cases. “Now the last Mexican fighter we’ve seen, you see when he wore his gloves what he tried to do. He was a Top Rank fighter.”
He was asked if he was referencing Antonio Margarito prior to Margarito’s bout with Shane Mosley.
“Yeah, Margarito. Then we seen another Top Rank fighter who fought a kid back in the day, to where he died — um, Panama Lewis was in his corner.”
He was asked if he was referencing Luis Resto, whose padding was removed from his gloves and who badly injured Billy Collins. After that fight, Collins never got in the ring later and later died in a motor vehicle crash caused by what police said was drinking and driving.
“Yes. Another Top Rank fighter. [Note: Maidana is not a Top Rank fighter.] These type of things happen in boxing. It’s all about my safety. You know, I’m the best fighter in the world, but my safety is first. And his [Maidana’s] safety should be first also. I have four beautiful children that I love. I have a beautiful family that I love. And I have live after boxing. I don’t know about him, but we’re the A-side. I feel that we should be on an even playing field. I’m taking random blood and urine testing. I think he should do the same thing. We have to. I’m the face of boxing, and it’s about keeping my sport clean.”
Mayweather said there was “no padding” in the pair of Everlast gloves that Maidana initially wanted for their first fight.
“How you trying to fight in gloves with no padding? Like I said before, this is not a bareknuckle brawl. This is a sport, even though this is a brutal sport. Still, you got guys that’s dying and getting beat with padded gloves. So this guy is trying to fight in gloves with no padding.”
That initial set of gloves wasn’t approved by the Nevada Athletic Commission back in May, but another set subsequently were. Mayweather was asked about this.
“I’m not here to talk about no commission. The only thing I can say is this: I got the job done in May. I’m going to get the job done again Sept. 13. So there’s no reason why we should be sitting right here talking about gloves. Like I said before, this is not a bareknuckle brawl. Once again, my safety… is very, very important to me. I have life after boxing. I have four children that I love, and I love my family dearly.”
