regarding the fire it was mitchell lama housing, I thought it might've been nycha from the brick, I actually drove past that building by chance in November

I hope whoever controls the building is forced to rehouse the people quickly

the high rise buildings I've lived in always have really heavy doors with what I'm assuming whatever mechanism is required by law so they generally close, in townhouse I've lived in that hasn't been the case but maybe they're not required there

maybe we need a citywide fire safety campaign because more often than not it's residents not using the best judgment
By law doors have to auto close and it didn't with this so I wouldn't say it's a lapse of judgement on the family that lived there when their reaction is too get the fukk out. The management company needs to be held liable here but with Adams, I don't think that will happen.

thats for the courts to figure out but I think it really needs to be hammered into people to make sure they close their doors, so many of the worst fires I read about in the Bronx or Brooklyn is because people didn't close their doors

but when I say poor judgment in this case the space heater, last month it was storing e-bike batteries, another time it was fireworks, with the Jews they were always using those hotplates because of the sabbath. and kids being left unattended and the list goes on. a lot of these fires are avoidable

I think a lot of dob and fdny stuff has understandably fallen on the wayside with covid but a lot of it really boils down to tenants and management companies

Why are residents being blamed for a building that didn’t have sufficient heat?

fukk the, “be better with your space heaters” shyt and answer why they have all of these open heating complaints?

based on what? 311 reports? I can understand reading them and thinking wtf but you're not seeing the big picture.

have you ever even lived in the city?

I mean they only just resulted in the deaths of a bunch of people, if they're this dangerous in the city maybe they should be banned

Yeah there's shared responsibility on what causes fires but when the mayor puts the blame on tenants when a door legally need to function as it should or the building should have provided heat, it doesn't seem like a shared blame from the highest office in the city. Landlord and building management are notorious for this type of stuff, nobody has gone to jail for any violation even if it results in death. They should require building management to provide information for fires if they're really serious about it.

They mayor is a fukking a$$hole. People have gone to jail for it and probably more should especially resulting in injury or death.

I haven't read the law but I'm sure the DOB or FDNY are supposed to keep a list and inspect them or at least that would make sense so probably not

The bigger picture being slumlords not providing adequate heating for their residents? NYC needs proper heating codes, so that people wouldn’t use fukked up space heaters.

NYC has great heating codes and it's required by law

more often than not what you're really running into is issues with equipment and repair
