Here’s a look-in at what’s happened at Flowery Branch:
# After 10-15 minutes of stretching and calisthetics, the Falcons broke into individual groups by position, working a variety of drills.
# Pro Bowl running back Devonta Freeman, who hopes to land a contract extension ASAP, missed a few reps in a passing drill when he visited with a trainer. He soon returned to practice, and it was unclear what prompted him to break away. The AJC’s Jeff Schultz suggests that the
Falcons should be thankful Freeman keeping (contract) negotiations a non-story.
#
Cornerback Desmond Trufant, who missed the back half of last season and the entire postseason with a pectoral muscle injury, continues to look especially spry. His footwork, and the quickness with which he reacts to receivers’ breaks is impressive.
# In the most watched competion of training camp, Wes Schweitzer worked at right guard with the first team offense and Ben Garland with the second unit. That order was the reverse of Thursday, when Quinn said they’re going to alternate a lot in camp and preseason games. The coach explained Friday morning that no decisions can be made on who will start until players get work in full pads and in preseason games.
# Both first-year coordinators,
Steve Sarkisianfrom the offensive side and
Marquand Manuelfrom defense, spoke with the media after practice. Here’s some
video on Sark, and you can check
AJC.com and
MyAJC.com in the near future for D. Orlando Ledbetter’s hot takes on both coaches.
# Long-time Atlanta sportstalk radio personality Beau Bock, now retired, was at practice.
# NFL officials were working practice, chiefly officiating now that the team is working 7-on-7 passing drills. They’ve thrown a few flags for defensive holding, and at least one for interference.
# The starting seven on defense: linebackers DeVondre Campbell, Deion Jones and LaRoy Reynolds, cornerbacks Trufant and Robert Alford and safeties Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal. Jones, who had 75 tackles and 31 assists, three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), 11 pass breakups, and a forced fumble while starting in 13 games and playing in 15 as a rookie, said he feels a lot better about his second NFL training camp than his first. “
“I’m a little bit more comfortable now,” he explained. “Last year, I had no clue what to expect. I was pretty much just running around like a chicken with my head cut off. It’s real good to sit back and just enjoy camp and focus on the things that I need to focus on.”
# As practice moved toward its conclusion, the Falcons tried several field goals with Pro Bowl kicker Matt Bryant and free agent Mike Meyer.
# Speaking of free agents, quarterback Alek Torgersen made some nice throws. Undrafted out of Penn, the native of Foley, Ala., was signed by Atlanta in late April.
#
Wide receiver Devin Fuller, a seventh-round draft choice in 2015 out of UCLA who spent all of his rookie season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, left the field before practice ended with a knee injury of undetermined severity. He walked on his own power.
# After running back Terron Ward made a catch out of the backfield and ran it out, undrafted rookie linebacker Jack Lynn of Minnesota poked the ball out of his hands once he was out of bounds. Ward didn’t seem to like that. As Lynn turned to jog back to the huddle, Ward grabbed the defender by the back collar of his jersey and gave a quick tug. No more harm came.
# Free agent tight end Darion Griswold caught a long pass and took it all the way to the house to prompt cheers from fans.
#
Rookie defensive back Damontae Kazee, a fifth-round draft choice out of San Diego State, had an interception. Starting cornerback Robert Alford was impressed.
“You can just see the progression (from OTAs) to now,” the veteran said. “You can see that he went home and studied, and you can tell that he worked on his craft. He has it all … he could play nickel, outside, he could play free safety. As you know, he played cornerback in college.”
# You may or may not have known that about Kazee, who appears to have no Sunshine Band.
