Dan Quinn: Jalen Collins will play in preseason, won’t be immediately released - The Falcoholic

Dan Quinn: Jalen Collins will play in preseason, won’t be immediately released

If anything’s going to happen with Jalen Collins, it’ll be weeks away.

Jalen Collins’ suspension, it would not be shocking to see the team ultimately cut ties with him, even if I find myself hoping they will not. If they do make that decision, it sounds like it’ll be a ways off, however.

In remarks at Flowery Branch, Quinn said Collins will get some preseason run since he won’t be suspended until the regular season, and that the team has no immediate plans to release Collins. In all likelihood, they’ll take a look at him in preseason, see how things stand when he returns from suspension, and then make a decision.
It's the smart play

Collins ended up being the perfect down the stretch last year when Trufant went down. I imagine that DQ and the staff would rather stash him then cut him as he is very cheap for the talent level plus having him down the stretch again may be vital.

I'd cut him if you can't trade him for a lower round pick :manny:

You've already got depth at the position with Tru & Rocky. Akeem King, Deli Otayoe & CJ Goodwin are going to battle for the fourth CB position now behind Brian Poole. He played well but why keep a player who's betrayed the trust of the organization twice in back to back seasons? He's proven he's not committed to the Falcons so why should the Falcons commit to him?

He's proven that he's reckless but remember a couple Seahawks players got caught up in PEDs too. That's the main reason he hasn't been cut imo.

Dude is trying to gain an edge and that's what DQ likes more than anything and you can never have too much depth in the NFL because all it takes is a few plays to lose 3-4 crucial players for a significant amount of time.

I'm not sure I buy that based off of TD's official statement right after the suspension came out. That sounded like a frustrated & angry GM coming down on a player who they aren't happy with. And DQ & TD have been pretty lock step with each other since they started working together so I doubt TD would be mad about Jalen & DQ would be ok with it. I think the play is to feature Jalen extensively in preseason and see if you can get value from a CB needy team.

Barring a major injury I think Jalen's as good as gone

I think what you're saying is realistic but losing talent this deep into the process is not what most NFL teams do.

Cutting him helps us in no way and we lose trading him for a even 4th round pick. He's not the only player having to sit games in the league. It's pretty common nowadays.

That's a bit of stretch to say collins was trying to gain an edge by using PEDs. Every player on the roster has gaimed an edge doing things the RIGHT way.

Quinn said it himself..."Jalen didn't protect the team." He violated the squad. The only reason he isn't being cut is because it costs us nothing to keep him and he doesn't count against on our 53 man roster. Only way he plays week 11 and beyond is if we have a rash of injuries at cb. He won't be on this roster next year. It sets a bad precedent for the rest of the team.

No way we get a pick higher than a 7th rounder for him. He is one strike away from missing the entire season next year. No one is taking that risk because you can't count on the kid

I can't say that I don't agree but he has leverage in that last year as soon as he was available, we needed him. If he kicks himself out the league then we cut our losses but I don't think he's going anywhere this season given the circumstances.

Rise up!
He's a very talented player. Yall must be forgetting about that. I agree that he will only play if we have injury problems at corner. They're trying to make an example out of him but they know they can't just give him away bc he's talented. If he was a scrub, he would've been gone last year.

They may be disappointed with him; They may not like him but they know he could be a huge asset. Let's just hope this doesn't turn into Josh Gordon situation. I know he doesn't have the pro bowls but he could be just as good at his position imo.

There's enough depth in the secondary to keep Collins as an insurance policy. Don't really gain anything by cutting him now.

Yea he's talented but he has a drug problem and he's proven he's unreliable. If he can't be trusted to stay clean why keep him? Breh is gone and we've still got a top 5 secondary without him. I also disagree with them trying to make an example out of him, if anything they tried to protect him and he betrayed their trust. The sooner he's off the team the better IMO

FLOWERY BRANCH –Here are five things we learned at Falcons practice on Tuesday:

1. Taylor signed. The Falcons were down a running back after B.J. Daniels suffered an undisclosed injury and signed running back Kelvin Taylor after his workout. He is the son of former NFL great Fred Taylor.

2. Injury report: Free safety Ricardo Allen wore a black jersey for the second day. He has a sore shoulder. He said he could play on Thursday night. Defensive end Jack Crawford (groin) returned to practice. Tackle Kevin Graf (right arm) and defensive end Martin Ifedi (ankle) did not practice.

3. Not playing. Wide receiver Julio Jones and Taylor Gabriel will be held out of the first exhibition game against Miami at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Graf, Ifedi and Daniels will not play. The coaching staff has not made a decision on rookie defensive end Takkarist McKinley, who’s recovering from shoulder surgery.

4. Play calling: Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will call plays from the press box and defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel will call plays from the sideline. Sarkisian will be in contact with quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan and defensive passing game coordinator Jerome Henderson will be Manuel’s eyes from the pressbox.

5. Garland to start. Ben Garland will start the first exhibition game at right guard, according to coach Dan Quinn. The battle is ongoing and Quinn said don’t make too much out of the team’s official depth chart that was released on Monday with Garland with the first team. Garland and Schweitzer have been rotating at practice.

Breaking:

RB Devonta Freeman and the Falcons have agreed to a 5 yr deal worth 41 million as reported by Michael Silver of the NFL.com, More updates on the way

EDIT:

The Atlanta Falcons and two-time Pro Bowlrunning back Devonta Freeman have agreed to a five-year contract extension that makes him the NFL's highest-paid running back, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network's Michael Silver. It includes $41.25 million in new money.

The former Florida State standout will take home an annual average of $8.25 million over the life of the deal. That's more than any other running back, pending LeVeon Bell's anticipated acceptance of a one-year, $12.1-million offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers. (The Steelers used their franchise tag on Bell, but he has thus far declined to sign and remains away from training camp.)

Around The NFL will have more on this shortly.
