Matt Lauer creepily whispered to Katie Couric ... "Keep bending over like that. It's a nice view" -- and it happened on set, while cameras were rolling.

This all went down in October 2006, and it's a little bizarre how it got out to the public. The show had gone to commercial, but in at least one city, the local affiliate stayed on NBC's in-studio feed. Matt was seen sitting on the couch as Katie got mic'd up.

As she leaned over in front of him to grab scripts, you clearly hear Lauer say, "Pretty sweater. Keep bending over like that. It's a nice view."

Here's the thing ... NBC says the employee who came forward on Monday was the first complainant ever against Lauer at the network. However, this video makes it clear everyone in the control room -- including the executive producer -- could have heard Lauer's leering behavior toward Katie.

Also, remember in 2012 ... Katie told Andy Cohen that Matt pinched her ass a lot.

I'll say one thing... they were friends weren't they? Can friends not joke around? I mean, a female friend swatting me on the ass as a joke is far different than a manager who I have no relationship with doing the same thing. Just saying I hope context is applied here.

There are conversations I've had with women that I can't repeat but it is understood that we are both joking. The problem is when the woman sees an opening for career advancement or just fukking the dude over and crying foul.

Again, I do not support any sexual harassment of any kind, but there's a very fine line here between what's friendly banter and what's actual sexual harassment. Think about girls you are close to and the things yall talk about.

The pants dropping and soliciting sex and all that though, zero tolerance. But the innocent stuff where it's obviously not serious beign called out as harassment is scary and a very slippery slope.

Hours after Matt Lauer was fired by NBC News for unspecified sexual misconduct, Variety published a story rife with detailed and disturbing claims about Lauer’s alleged harassment and abuse of women at the Today show.

The report’s author, Ramin Setoodeh, said on Wednesday that NBC News had been aware of the impending story before it fired Lauer. Variety spoke to dozens of people for the report, in which three different women accused him of harassment. Among its claims:

• Lauer “once gave a colleague a sex toy as a present. It included an explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her, which left her mortified.”
• He “summoned a different female employee to his office, and then dropped his pants, showing her his penis. After the employee declined to do anything, visibly shaken, he reprimanded her for not engaging in a sexual act.”
• “His office was in a secluded space, and he had a button under his desk that allowed him to lock his door from the inside without getting up. This afforded him the assurance of privacy. It allowed him to welcome female employees and initiate inappropriate contact while knowing nobody could walk in on him, according to two women who were sexually harassed by Lauer.”
