P was also sharing bar codes on albums to boost sales and putting up fake plaques. Notice how the label had a hard time getting it's catalogue on streaming. all the bullshyt he was pulling caught up. from outright copying songs to interpolations. stealing hooks. he never anticipated the internet era. P was bowing out by 99 with the last don for a reason. looking for a ball contract :mjlol:

his mythology is such bullshyt. he got a check from family and then started a label copying everyone he was around in the west then the south and still went bust.

Has anyone ever heard of Ruthless Records... Eazy and Jerry in 87 independent putting up plaques.. long before P and around the same time as Prince but even better. Ruthless scared the whole industry. they were putting up major numbers before any other independent. somehow Eazy got written out of the hip hop independence story for this goof P. I suspect because of Jerry Heller...Just because no limit artists are not speaking up doesn't mean they good. P himself isn't set. Their tour was a disaster and their music don't stream well because of the back in the day shenanigans.
I agree wholeheartedly... P was getting it but he was also pulling some shenanigans that should never be replicated. But the overall "ATTENTION" he brought the south will always be commendable. But in the end P lost No Limit and hasn't done anything of note since. Once he took the label to Universal and could no longer pull that shyt it was curtains. But that 95-98 No Limit run is gonna be 4ever unmatched. But Skull Duggury wasn't really going gold ppl.

Mc Hammer, Will Smith and Vanilla Ice are responsible for the commercialization of hip-hop. They took hip-hop from sub culture to mainstream culture ,also LL Cool J, Beastie boys and Run DMC played a big part. The labels seen dollar signs way before Master P came along. I give P credit for moving units without making radio friendly music though

But it's clear that the hip hop that was around when Russell Simmons was building his label was completely different from the hip hop of master p's day

Hence his whole point. Hip hop was still seen as a fad in the 80's. Master P one of the ones who helped the genre stay around by proving it had commercial staying power

Hate all yall want, them no limit albums were going plat after the deaths of pac and big. And they were dropping back to back on top of the soundtracks they were making

to expect an industy standard of sincere and "by the book" practices in any business arena is to be naive about business at large

The actual points both P and J made are being obfuscated because of the weird slant and narrative the OP is throwing on it....P is saying J rap-a-lot gave the blueprint for those specifically in the South on how to make money from the rap game (he wasn't speaking on the industry at large).. Prince spoke about what exactly the model was, fully autonomous independent labels that cut deals for distribution without giving up equity in the company and maintaining ownership of their masters ... something that other names mentioned in the thread (Eazy with Ruthless, Rush with Def Jam, etc) did not do...I'd argue this is an example of innovation born out of necessity (instead of some kind of innate southern business accumen), the major labels were based out of LA and New York and rap scenes popped up in certain cities without having access to them so they did it themselves... but the point remains....And by the time the major labels did come knocking they had enough leverage to retain ownership

Now P squandering his business and losing the no limit masters in bankruptcy is an entirely different topic :mjlol:
