Mass Effect 4 will not feature Shepard

Mass Effect 4 – or whatever the next Mass Effect will be called – will star a hero that is not just a re-hash of Commander Shepard, BioWare Montreal has revealed to VG247. Find out the studio’s philosophy to crafting the next star of the franchise below.

Speaking with VG247 at a recent EA showcase, BioWare Montreal producer Fabrice Condominas agreed that the studio has never shied away from the fact that Mass Effect will continue after the current trilogy, but with a new hero.

We asked him what the studio’s approach to whatever comes next in the galaxy-hopping franchise will involve, to which Condominas replied, “There is one thing we are absolutely sure of – there will be no more Shepard, and the trilogy is over.”

“This is really our starting point. Now the Mass Effect universe is vast, and very, very rich. So at this point in time, we don’t even know what kind of time frame we’re going to be in. All we’re doing is more gathering ideas from the teams, gathering feedback to see several things.”

“So first, we don’t want to make ‘Shepard 2′, or Mass Effect 4 with like, ‘oh there’s no more Shepard but you’re a soldier in the universe’. So this will be a very, very different context for sure, and nothing has been decided on the rest.”

man that ending from me3 basically turned me off completly from this franchise. If ME4 does come out i'm prob gonna wait to make sure fans are feeling it instead of buying it off blind optimism

The ending was LOST-levels of "why the fukk did I waste my time"-ness

i do realize that the universe is really huge but its not the same without shepard...they could make a spinoff game and just wait couple years and reboot it instead of this shyt...

IMO, the Extended Cut fixes the ending

I think it's cool; Shepard should be retired (if he/she lived)

They should atleast let you import your Shepard so he/she makes a cameo

Not surprising, not sure why people would expect him to come back. It's likely impossible for them to work out a way to import a character from this gen into next gen anyways (On consoles that is, PC could be done easily).

Shepard as a character sucks anyways. And it doesn't matter how you played as him. The male version didn't even have decent voice acting.

Not really sure where they can go from here....the franchise has some decent lore but most of it is involving aliens. They aren't likely to make a game where you don't play as human so what can they do really? They can make one of the ME3 endings canon but even then...is there going to be ANOTHER hyper-advanced civilization that tries to wipe out humanity?

Bioware wrote themselves into a hole.

What's gonna be more sinister than the reapers?

One reason why I really liked the ME series was because of the mystery behind the Reapers and the end of the world scenario but now that ME3 wrapped that up I don't think I'll be moved or get hyped by any other villains Bioware comes up with.
