Great series. I like the real-life issues and comparisons throughout the series. It was also great to see Sam's and Bucky's journey becoming friends, especially after seeing where it all started CAP TWS, CAP CW, to IW & EG.
Sam is a sub-par front-line hero. But Marvel know that arguments against Sam will get mixed up so there is no point even starting them.
At the end of the day brehdom gets a nickel and everyone else gets a dime. In fact Marvel have had to to spend 6 episodes convincing their audience why that nickel is equal to that dime. Convincing them that what you can see with your own eyes is not the case.
In some ways they are right about the superficially and 2-dimensionality of many hero archetypes, but in the hero iconography context of "heroic figures" they are wrong and they know it.
So, a-la Ali G, in the in-group analysis we see the nuance of Sam being Cap, but when subjected to the usual all-group/out-group analysis (including that employed by Marvel when casting their other leading men) the clear message is that Sam is not quite as "good" as the original one and also not quite as good as the other leading front men. And his is an unequivocally black hero. And that dual message is not a bad one. Marvel just place out the messages and leave their fans to connect the dots.
In comics the weaker a character is (power-wise) generally speaking the intimidating they make him physically. I.e. Batman vs Flash or even Superman. The less-powered characters have stronger personalities are taller so as to offset the group power differentials. Because of the way cowls looks, you need a strong jaw and the typical high hero forehead to wear one. This leads to heroes being drawn a certain way and heroes (and villains) looking a certain way.
Now you might think that FATWS is a sign that marvel is moving away from this but there are few signs of this in who Marvel have lined up for the next non-breh roles.
"Flim-flam" *ahem* I mean Sam has got to be the only one out there who looks like he is running around in his pyjamas. New "can't scrap" *ahem* I mean Cap has to be the only one on a peace mission, who spends more time running from people than fighting them. New "Yap" *ahem* I mean Cap has the power of "talk" is a nice guy but no female in sight. New "Sap" *ahem* I mean Cap, is now what? The weakest Avenger?
Let Mackie make his money. Good luck to him. In real life he has 10 times the character of most in those MCU actors.
But Marvel is sending out messages and once again, even in 2023 (MCU time), brehdom is being relegated to 2nd best. Mackie out here looking like he is running around in his big brother's pyjamas.
Maybe one day I will put together a more detailed thread on this but bottom line is they have yet to put a breh forward as the #1 man in the room. Meanwhile Cap, Tony and Thor were allowed to spend 10 years jostling for that position.
