For all the shyt the prequels get (and rightfully so at times), they at least had a comprehensive overarching narrative and story you could get after viewing all three. It may not have been executed WELL, but you could see how:
- The Jedi Council (Minus Qui-Gon, who was on the outs with them at the time) being exceedingly arrogant lead to Palpatine being unchecked and under the radar for a decade plus. During that time he has two apprentices, creates an entire clone army that has a kill switch command to murder every jedi in existence that he can give at a moment's notice, and slowly gains more and more political power under the guise of being a kind, mindful political ally.
- The Council's fear of Anakin and his power & potential lead to them SEVERELY fukking up how they handled him with them being heavy handed and overly cautious with him. Up to and including trying to indoctrinate him into their ways despite him being way too old by that time, seemingly stiffing his growth intentionally at times, and not teaching him the ways of The Darkside so he'll know at least what to look for to better defend himself, leaving him vulnerable to the manipulations of an extremely skilled Sith Lord.
- Qui-Gon Jinn's death royally fukked everything from jump, because it meant that the woefully unprepared Obi Wan (Who had only been promoted to Jedi Knight RIGHT AFTER Qui-Gon's death) would take over Anakin's training, which is the equivalent of a C+ student tutoring an A+ student. Obi Wan was constantly bytching out and and low key competing with Anakin in Movie two to establish dominance, and by the time Movie three came around had become too emotionally attached to Anakin to the point that he's blind to the path he was headed down til dude left a pile of dead younglings in the council room.
You can see how all the above factors lead to the rise of The Empire and the creation of Darth Vader, even if they didn't do a great job at explaining it on screen. With TLJ and TFA, it feels like two soft reboots that are loosely strung together that's just spinning it's wheels while they figure out where to go next. This shyt is just a money grab with no REAL plan, and it's lead to 3 shytty movies and one okay movie so far.
The director decided to kill him off for no fukking reason and got a fukking ton of backlash for it... because they killed him off like a bytch... he didn't even fight!!!!
I for one wanted to see how crazy strong luke became but we never even got that starkiller shyt!!!
