I think it's more that she stopped giving a fukk about performing at her age. She rich, and old. She probably half drunk here, it's New Years. Didn't warm up or rehearse at all. Tried to take the easy lip sync way out, and got burned for it. She probably still doesn't care, as she most likely got paid hella for this.

Watch the video again. She couldn't hear the backing track. so she didn't know where to start or jump in. she said when she walked out "we can't hear" and tried to catch up and was like "oh well."
basically its the equivalent of rappers yelling at the sound man" ay sound man, turn my mic up. yo sound man..turn up the stage monitors... sound man..."
thats all that was.
and for those who have ever performed, especially a large outside event with a loud crowd. its super hard to hear. what you hear in the crowd and what we hear on TV is not the same as what they hear if the sound isnt just right in those on stage monitors or the "in ear" monitors the people use a lot. now can you still try to make it happen and make it work? sure. but when you're old like she is. old meaning been around for so long and perform millions of times. she aint trying all that hard. so thats why she was like "welp... thats the way it is... i got paid. and it aint my fault. oh well."

I've only seen clips of this (too cringey to watch the entire thing) but from what I'm reading, her earpiece was knocked off/stopped working and she couldn't hear herself over the noise, which is why she sounded like shyt whenever she tried to sing.
For God's sake someone PLEASE tell me that's all there was to it. I really don't wanna give Mariah no epic L first thing in 2017.....

It's always cringeworthy watching someone collapse not only on TV but on NYE in Time Square on national television.
