Crawford-Algieri Makes Things Easier, Says WBO Prez
Posted by: Miguel Rivera on 1/29/2015

WBO President Paco Valcarcel is very supportive of a possible junior welterweight fight between Terence Crawford (25-0, 17 KOs) and Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs). Crawford was the WBO's champion at 135-pounds and plans to move up in weight for his next ring appearance.

Algieri previously held the belt after upsetting Ruslan Provodnikov last June. He was stripped of the title prior to moving up in weight last fall to challenge WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, dropped Algieri six times for a wide decision win. After that loss, Algieri filed a protest to regain his WBO title.

A Crawford-Algieri contest is being discussed by Top Rank. If the fight is complete, for the WBO it would solve two issues at once.

"Crawford is returning from being a world champion at lightweight and we would give priority to him [to fight for the title at 140]. We are still taking part in the protest of Chris Algieri, because in theory he renounced his title just before the first bell rang for his fight with Manny Pacquiao, but he put in his protest and we are engaged in that. If Crawford-Algieri is done, it facilitates things for us," Paco told ESPN Deportes.

Crawford, Walters HBO Double in Play For 3/21 in NY

Promoter Bob Arum has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that a doubleheader featuring former WBO lightweight champion Terrence Crawford (25-0, 17KOs) and WBA featherweight titlist, Nicholas Walters (25-0, 21KOs), is being scheduled for March 21st at the Theater of Madison Square Garden in what would be an HBO doubleheader.

The original plan called for Crawford to fight on April 18th, when asked about the date moving to March 21, Arum explained - "it's because that's the date that was available at the Garden."

Crawford could be facing Chris Algieri (who briefly held this title last year) and a name being mentioned for Walters is Puerto Rican, Gamalier Rodriguez.

Algieri's boxing ability vs Crawford's should provide for an entertaining bout between the 2. I lean towards Crawford, but him facing Algieri will be a step up from the much smaller fighters he has faced in his last 2 fights at 135. Besides, it wasnt fair to strip Algieri for moving up to fight Pacquiao, so it's only right he gets to "defend" his title:obama:

I'd like to see this fight on the Floyd/Manny undercard as well if it can happen

Chris Algieri Looks To Add Experienced Trainer
Posted by: Edward Chaykovsky on 1/7/2015

Former WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8KOs) suffered his first career defeat in November, when he was knocked down six times and dominated by WBO welterweight king Manny Pacquiao.

After the fight, there was a lot of criticism over the corner work of his trainer, Tim Lane, who made some wild comments in the corner about letting Algieri out of his cage and encouraging a knockout of Pacquiao.

Algieri doesn't necessarily sound like he's looking to get rid of Lane, but he is looking to beef up his existing corner by adding an experienced trainer to the team.

"I am a loyal guy but I need to make the best moves for myself and for my career. We got very far on our own and learning as we went but yes it may be time to increase the level of experience in the corner to compliment what we have been doing for years -I learned an incredible amount this year and specifically from the Pacquiao fight. Most importantly I learned that there is much to learn! I have much more to do in the sport and I feel I belong at the elite level. This is bump in the road that will ultimately make me a better fighter and person. The camps got a little longer in weeks but the intensity stayed the same as I always train hard. The biggest change was the media attention and the press/promotion obligations, which were heavy at times," Algieri said during a live interview session on Reddit.

Take over, the breaks over, nikkas.

I dont think anyone has said he couldnt beat Chris Algieri:comeon:

You said he can beat EVERYONE at 140 and 147:usure:

That's crazy, because it's not a lock that he just beats Algieri yet. He's never faced someone his own size that could box (Algieri/Postol/Vargas/Peterson/Herrera). He's never faced someone his own size that could punch (Matthysse/Provodnikov/Garcia). He's never faced someone his own size that could do BOTH (AB:ahh:)...........I didnt even GET to the 147lbers yet:heh:

Let's see what he does with Algieri, before putting that type of pressure that you're applying on him

I got TC in a somewhat close fight. i think that the PAC fight will give TC extra confidence and now everyone knows just how soft that nikka Chris hits. I doubt that Chris can be a B-level type of fighter that CAN actually BOX. But Chris got decent speed and some good combos. I would watch the fight.
