So obviously Detroit is in trouble, but one thing Detroit has in its favor is that it has a history of doing this kind of work. Apple and Google have recently started to try and get back into assembling and possibly manufacturing back in the U.S. so why not look at Detroit? The city is in debt and there are no jobs, why not look at the hottest markets out there today? Electronics.

shyt 700K is still a good amount of people with many I am assuming ties to the auto plants in some capacity. Clearly local government is a mess out there, but I cannot understand why this is not being looked at? Lure some of these companies who want to bring this back into the city into Detroit and offer some great incentives others won't offer. What is land worth out in Detroit these days? A small stack of Pringles? Hell you have used cars that are worth more than houses out in the D.

Also, put Google Fiber up there. Push the $350 fee model and you get internet for free for 7 years. That will get a whole lot of people to sign up...plus would bring good PR for Google.

40% of street lights out? over 78,000 homes abandoned? Who still lives out there? @winb83 @Ed MOTHERfukkING G @Demonic Jenkins

It would be great if the city can right itself

The reality is there are Detroits everywhere in America.

Just off the top of my head in NYS... Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Plattsburgh, Watertown, Massena, and Malone.

:wow:

It's something I have thought hard about.

i think apple's supposed increase in american production is just BS for making them more likeable once people realized that the most valuable company on earth barely pays taxes and probably benefits economies in other countries far more than it does in america

the only real company of that magnitude that i would trust is intel, and they favor the southwest.

i cant imagine what google could manufacture in high numbers in detroit to make a dent in detroit's problems.

Well, the Nexus Q will eventually come out again :snooze:

I don't know, it just seems like manufacturing these devices eventually has to come back here..and I think Detroit is a great opportunity.

@88m3 I didn't know Syracuse was in bad shape. I don't think anyone cares about Buffalo

that might depend on how close detroit is to where they source their materials from.

even in terms of say, apple, the labor costs of american wages wouldnt be a big deal, but the materials they use to make the phones are all asian, making the prospect of bringing the production of apple devices to america one of the worst ideas any CEO could ever have because you would be adding both massive transportation cost and production delay to logistics

back to google. i dont know how many nexus' sold the last time, but i guess that might be good for a few hundred employees. have them cross trained to make tablets and google glasses, LOL

I'm not sure if it's as bad as the 90's 00's....the last time I was there was in 09' or 10' to party at SU and the area around the campus area is really nice but the majority of the city isn't...

Unemployment and crime are out of hand out there... whenever I watch the news up there it's triple shooting, stabbing, rape :snoop:

cities are rundown as hell too, looking like the Bronx in the 90's.

Nah I don't agree. This isn't a case like Newark was in...high crimes and everything else ran wild in Newark and nobody cared. Nobody will probably ever care about Newark NJ except for Cory Booker.

Detroit is different and I am assuming many of those structures out there can be bought and put people to work relatively easily. The city has a history of blue collar workers...something big companies should take full advantage of, just in smarter ways. Lifetime benefits for workers is nice, but unions are part of the problem they got into this mess in the first place.

I am almost tempted to move out there and spark change.

@NZA I was joking about the Nexus Q...that shyt was a huge flop LOL. Everything will have to be made here, but then that brings up another question. Would you pay a certain percentage more for a Mac or an iPhone that was made completely in the U.S.? I think that's the debate to be had...many will say no. I think the Mac Pro will help Apple start thinking of bringing more assembling and maybe even real manufacturing here. The iPhone will be huge if they can figure out the math.

it's sad that the economy would force people to choose to pay more for less just because it is local. we should have already had policies in place to make america more expensive to sell foreign products to, even if the company is supposedly american

at this point the only thing i can see helping is a new product or service, not bringing existing products back that have already been done efficiently elsewhere.

People looking into buying some property should look in Detroit. I've been searching listings lately and I'm shocked how low I am finding some of these things. Some of you probably spend more on weed in 2 years lol

There are a few things that make Detroit unique. There are reasons some of the fastest growing companies are skipping those other cities you mentioned.
