This is why I believe I could kill an enemy and get away with it...
From watching the First 48 Hrs and reading these kinds of stories, I have come to realize that people get caught because...
(1) There was a witness
(2) There was a co-defendant
(3) Humans have an in-born drive to snitch on themselves...We want to be recognized and validated...It's hard for human being to do, witness, or experience something and not talk about it to someone else...In one way or another, a human being will find away to express actions, feelings, emotions, and ideas...
(4) Physical evidence
If you commit a crime in a way that eliminates the first 3 elements...The chances of you getting caught are drastically reduced, even if you leave DNA evidence on the scene (granted the cops don't have your DNA in their database)...
It is that easy to get away with a crime...
Don't be seen, Do it alone, Don't talk about it...

While looking at dude's pictures, the cops probably recognized SPECIFIC evidence that was noted in a crime, that would make a reasonable person think that dude was either involved or knew someone who was involved in the crime, and dude's name probably came up during the investigation...they can get search warrants just based on instagram pics ?
You put it all together then you have probable cause...
