My nephew is a toddler and he wont even go near an iron because he thinks it is always hot. No way at 12 that he didnt know that what he was doing could have had deadly consequences. He may not have meant to hurt his grandmother (though i highly doubt it) but he had to know the damage that a fire can cause. So that alone should have been enough for him not to set it.
