people I've know that live there currently or have in the past say it's safe, but I'm not buying what they're selling (no pun intended).

For the average tourist, Mexico is very safe. Anybody who practices common sense should have a good time, but if you look for trouble you will find it. I spent 2 years during college in southern Mexico, but spent time in most of the west coast states. Only times I've ever felt uneasy are when I played in rural basketball tourneys. The combination of sports, gambling, prize money, old feuds, poverty and alcohol are a ****show waiting to happen. Safe to say that there a few neighborhoods and towns where I'm not welcome anymore.

That being said, things can escalate quickly in those border cities and towns. QDEP Shabazz.
