Whatever happened, it was sudden. So sudden that the pilots couldn't make a mayday call. If the plane was hijacked, the likelihood of the hijackers entering the cockpit are slim to none. The cockpit doors are so safe that they pose a risk to pilots themselves from getting back in the event something happens that requires them to go back in.
It was an explosion of some sort. Mechanical or a bomb. All aircraft have transponders that transmit their location, altitude and speed to Air Traffic Control radar. Whatever happened, immediately killed their electronic systems. In the event it was a malfunction of their transponder, they would still be able to fly and safely land. However the plane had about 8 hours of fuel so it definitely ran out by now.
RIP to those passengers.
and the Boeing 777 is arguably the safest aircraft in all of aviation history. Even though its been around for 20 years, planes have been around for shorter and had suffered major accidents.
